Tot MOM's talk to me about starting to self feed with utensils

Ok, so after the holidays are over the girls will be 18 months and I want to start working with them on learning to self feed with utensils, well maybe just a spoon to start. How do you go about doing this? I have been reading some suggestions on baby center and all others talk about is you feeding them with a spoon and have them try to take a bite with their own spoon and they learn. But they all describe this as a one on one thing to do with your baby during meals. Ok so most of you know I am on my own most of the time because of DH's constant traveling so how am I supposed to do a one on one with both at the same time.

I am looking for helpful tips and ideas on starting this. Also did any of you use a covering smock like the one from babybjorn (really pricey I know)? If so did you find them helpful or just a waste of money. Also did you purchase a plate/bowl and spoon set that you really like when they were first learning to use a bowl.

Sorry for all the questions, but this is the new thing I am going to have to tackle with them and I am a little intimidated about it. My BFF says it is just something you have to keep working with them on, but she only had one to teach at a time.

TIA

  • i don't really remember how old Griffin was when we started... we just let him start using spoons - giving it a try with his, while we also fed him with another one.  Yeah- it's messy- but i wouldn't buy special smocks for it... you'll just be doing mroe laundry or have more stained clothes- but that's gonna happen as they get older.

i never "taught" griffin - so to me, it's not something that much harder with 2- it's just twice the mess.... I just let him keep trying until he got good at it.

There are certain foods that are much easier to start with -- like oatmeal made really thick, mashed potatos - things that are thick and sticky... not slippery things like applesauce, etc.

I really like the Gerber Graduates spoon/fork/knife set - the fork works much better than most kid forks (which don't pierce anything and make it hard to use).... yet it's not sharp.  We just started letting Grififn use the knife, too, and he LOVES doing that and is quite good at it, too.

forks are sometimes easier for kids, too - we told griffin "poke and eat" and he learned forks pretty fast.

  • My twins aren't there yet, but ditto everything Goldie said. Love the Gerber Graduates forks - much easier to use than others. We gave Rhett a fork and let him play/practice with it while we fed him or while he self fed with his fingers. I know feeding two at once will be very challenging, but letting them play with the fork while they are self-feeding with their hands should be similar.
