Cloth Diapers

I was wondering if anyone is considering using cloth diapers or have used them? What are your thoughts on them? How many did you start with per child?

We have spent several months doing research and the cost difference alone is just astounding. I never really thought about it when my teenagers were born, but having three at once makes a bit of a difference. My husband likes the idea of less landfill mass and I like the idea of the cost savings over the 2-3 year period (around$8,000).

I haven't really talked with anyone though who has done it and would like to know about their experience.

Re: Cloth Diapers

  • Not a MoM but a mom of 2 kids. I CD my second baby. I am supposed to wash every other day and I have often thought that since my washer is never full, it'd be no more work to wash diapers for 2 kids.

I hang dry them, which is major cost savings, since the drying is really what gets you. And the purchase price of diapers. I buy diapers at cottonbabies, I signed up for their emails so I get alerts for specials. I bought a bunch of seconds, and just this week got some small size fitteds at 40% off for the baby that I am currently carrying.

One thing to consider is that you could start CDing when they would fit in a medium size diaper. When they're tiny, they poop so much and so loose, and you're sort of off your rocker anyway (esp with trips), so it could be too hard. Buying small size diapers is expensive for the short time they're in use.

So a good plan might be to start CDing around 4 months or so of age. At that point, they poop fewer times, need fewer changes, and you can get by with one-size diapers, so you don't have to buy multiple sizes.

  • I plan to CD and have my stash ready, but can't give you much advice because my babies aren't here yet. Definitely go to The Eco-Friendly Family board and ask over there. I don't think there are too many multiple moms who CD, but I have seen a few and I know one lady just posted that she has 3 kids in CD (a toddler and twins).  I'm excited, both for the cost-savings and for the landfills. Theecofriendlyfamily.blogspot.com has great information too.

  • We just started doing a CD "trial" this week!

I heard to wait until they were out of the newborn size for the same reasons the PP stated. I actually waited until they were ready to move to size 2 diapers. We got enough newborn and size one diapers at my shower that I didn't have to buy any diapers in those sizes.

Because itis a trial, I ordered some Kushies. They are less expensive than most of the other All in one's I have seen (<$50 for a 5 pack on diapers.com). If we end up loving it, I may spring for something better. So far, these have been great.

I also picked these for their time savings :o). They have flusable liners that come on a paper towel type roll, so when they poop, you dump the poop and the liner down the toilet. I couldn't imagine sprying out diapers with 2 babies.

I think it may be totally doable!

  • I use those liners also - when we anticipate a poop. My kid is a little older and fairly predictable. Between the liner and microfiber diapers, I don't spray too much anymore. But I still like to have the sprayer for the bad ones.
  • We CD DD, and will for the twins as well.  The cost is what made me switch.

With DD, we didn't start until she was about 3 months old.  We use one-size pocket diapers exclusively with her (both BumGenius 3.0 and FuzziBunz).  I prefer the fleece of the FB, because it's easier to spray or plop poop off of, but I prefer the velcro of the BGs because trying to snap a diaper on a moving target is tough.

With the twins, we'll start at the beginning.  I have a stash of borrowed pre-folds.  I need to supplement some more, and some covers.

We've never used liners, and never had a problem.  We have a sprayer hooked to our toilet, and it works great.  If you're exclusively BFing, you don't need to do anything but toss them in the washer, as breastmilk is water soluble.

I agree - the EFF gals are great.  There are a couple of twin moms (j.h.mommy being the one I can think of, but I know there's at least one more) that CD.

  • check out diaperswappers.com.  There are a few twin moms who CD on there.  I CD'ed my son, and plan on CDing the twins as well.  I loved it so much, I will do it no matter what.  (I will have some sposies on hand in the early days.  I'm not fooling myself that I'll be all about laundry on no sleep!)
  • We've CD'd our daughter since birth and now the twins too so we have 3 in CD at the moment. We wash everyday. It's not a big deal. We use(d) Kissaluv fitteds (KL0s) for the newborn stage then pocket diapers from then on (BumGenius, Fuzzibunz, GreenAcre, & Happy Heiny). I like pockets because you can customize the absorbancy to your child and they wash cleaner than the All in ones. The few AIOs I had always smelled.

THere's tons of online support. The Eco-Friendly board on the Bump is a wealth of info. As well as Diaperswappers.com. There's a bunch of websites about detergents and different intro to cloth diaper sites.
