Recommend a Highchair

Tess definitely isn't ready for a highchair yet, but we want to get her one for Christmas (I know fun gift, hehe).  We live in an apartment right now, so something small or portable would be great.  We have a Bumbo seat and I was thinking about getting the tray for it so that she could use that for a while, but then I read a blog where the mom tried that and the baby hated it.

Also, are the really expensive highchairs worth the money or can I be looking for something on Craigslist?

I'm really not sure why this is such an important decision for me, maybe because it is the only thing I have actually decided on getting Tess for Christmas. :)

Re: Recommend a Highchair

  • We used the FP space saver & it was great. Our kitchen is small so I didn't want a full sized one.

  • I really like ours...it's a Chicco with a green seat. It's not small but it is very solid and adjustable. It comes with two of those tray toppers that you can pop off and put in the dishwasher (although we just wash ours)

IMO...a highchair isn't something to "cheap out on" because so many get recalled for different reasons and it would be hard to trace an older one. DS has taken to throwing his entire body weight into the back of the highchair to let me know he's done....so a lesser highchair would be pretty dangerous for him.

    DS didn't like his bumbo.

  • We love, love, love our FP Space Saver one.  It attaches to our dining room chair, so it doesn't take up extra space, and it converts.  We started using it at about 4 months with his cereal, and it reclined.  It will convert on to a booster as well.  I know several moms that have sold their high chairs and gone out to get this one because the high chairs take up so much space.
  • My friend has the FP space saver as well.  She really likes it so I put it on our registry.  But then right before the baby was born I realized that we have cloth material on our chairs - not the wooden ones.  So anything dropped or spilled would be embedded into the fabric.

I ended up exchanging it for the FP precious planet high chair.  It is still in the box, so I am not sure how much space it will take up, but I am guessing quite a bit.

  • We also have the FP space saver and love it.  I'd definitely recommend it.

  • I have the full size FP Zen HC at my house and the FP space saver at my mom's.

Honestly I prefer the full size  because it seems more roomie, it's on wheels and it tucks her into the table better.  It also obviously use up any of our adult chairs.  BUT the FP space saver is really nice because it uses the existing chair.  They both recline and wipe clean and I don't think you could go wrong with either.

  • jnk - you could put a hand towel under the seat so that any food that is dropped lands there instead of on your chair.  That's what we did before we got our new dining set.
  • Ya, that would have been a good idea - I didn't even think of that.  We already exchanged it though back in August.  One nice thing is that we have a counter-height table, so the full size high chair should still fit in well.
