Hi - so I had a c-section on Oct 15th and am surprised how much longer the recovery/weight loss is compared to my first. Let me start by saying I worked out until 2 days before I delivered. I've completed two marathons and ran religiously before getting pregnant with DS, but switched to elliptical/walking/biking while pregnant due to having a miscarriage prior to this pregnancy. However, I had my 6 week appt and was shocked to discover I still have 14 lbs to lose...I've only lost 11, which doesn't make sense considering I'm breastfeeding and the baby was 7 lbs. Ugh....I feel like its going to take forever this time around. I started running again this week, but have illiotilial band syndrome on my right knee, so I can't get more than 4 miles and have to stop. So, I'm feeling defeated all around. I feel like I'm never going to see my pre-baby body after 2 kids no matter how hard I work. Any recommendations...anyone else feel the same? I keep telling myself to give it time, but I just want to be back to where I was....jelly belly and butt gone:)

Re: Does it take longer to get back in shape after 2nd?
I just wanted to drop a quick note for you IT Band...I have a 2 year old and am a big runner as well (ran 4th marathon 6months after DD via c-section)...
Your IT Band is of course very tight from not running. I highly suggest getting an aggressive sports massage. That person can get into the band and strip it and help to release it.
I always go to my massage guy before even considering a Dr. so thought I would mention it...
Hope your get back into the swing of things soon. Running is seriously a drug.
Thanks - I never thought of that....never had a sports massage, so something to consider. How much do they normally cost? Wow...you ran a marathon 6 months after c-section. That is awesome! I ran in college and am trying to keep it up since then. I've ran Columbus and Boston. Would like to do Chicago next fall. At least that is my goal if I get this IT band thing figured out. When are you running your next marathon?
A sports massage really will vary in cost...my guy is about 50.00 a half an hour and he never needs more then that.
Try to get some suggestions from your local running store or college. It's gotta be someone who will really get in there deep.
A cheaper option is a foam roller. I happen to work in a running store and we sell these babies all the time. You will put it on your IT Band and roll yourself up and down and the weight of your body helps apply the pressure needed.
I did my 5th marathon a year after DD and then my 6th this past fall at Twin Cities (personal best). AWESOME marathon. I highly suggest that one too. I haven't hit Chicago yet but know that's a fast one and would be a good course to get back on it.
Nice on having the Boston under the belt! You know what you're doing then.
What is your time goal should all go smoothly?
Thanks - I will pick up a foam roller for IT band and I ordered the Pattstrap and received it in the mail today...have you heard? Supposedly helps when worn 2-3 inches above the knee. We will see...however, yesterday I couldn't even make 3 miles as my left kneecap was killing me...excruciating pain. I'm so frustrated...I don't know what the deal is...if I'm just not meant to run anymore or what. And like you said...it is my drug. I LOVE it...doing the elliptical isn't the same. I don't know what's going on. I'm going to try the Pattstrap tomorrow - did a spinning class today.
I ran Columbus marathon in 3:22 and Boston in 3:10, but I trained my a*s off for it. I'll probably never see either of those times again after two kids:) IF I can even run anymore. UGH......I need to look into a motion control shoe also.
6 marathons is awesome. Do you run with the kids? I ran with DD when she turned 5 months....every day and will start again (hopefully) in the spring with both of them. I have a Dreamer Design single that I love and just got the double....thanks for your help.
Congrats on your Boston time!! that is awesome!
Don't give up...no way! I bet w/ the right coaching you can break 3 hours. Maybe not right away...for sure though
Since I work in a running store...I have to ask why you're heading out to get a Motion Control Shoe...If you don't need that much stability/correction that you could end up over correcting and actually cause more problems for the IT Band...
The heavy gray dense material on the side part of the shoe called stability is actually designed to prevent you from rolling to the inside and if you don't need that much it will do it's job any way and can cause you to run on the outside to much...
To many people are quick to jump to motion control...what shoe are you in now? Have you had your gait looked at? Sorry about the questions but it's what I do...
I'm not a marathoner but I will give a shout out to a) yoga for tight IT bands and b) orthotics for your running shoes for any problem.
As far as getting back in shape, that's what I hear. I'm trying not to worry about it yet, as I'm just 12 days PP. But I think having a c/s this time, plus how everything just stretches more the second time will cause me to have to take longer.
One of my girlfriends who's also really active and has two already told me the second time definitely took longer.
My bigger issue I think is going to be that my gym got rid of childcare and that it's flu season anyway.
