Did any of you take any classes before you delivered? At what point in your pregnancy did you take them, and where did you take them. Since we're so new to the area, I really don't know what options are out there. Thanks!

Re: Childbirth Ed
Anymore, there's so much information available on the internet and in books regarding childbirth that I don't think the classes are very helpful. Most people I know who've taken them said they were a waste of time and money because it was all stuff they knew from their own research/reading. If you hang out on the 3rd trimester board and start reading birth stories people post, you can get a pretty good idea of what goes on, whether you have an induction, c/s, go to labor on your own, etc. I never took any classes and still felt pretty prepared. Not much during labor came as a surprise.
If you want to try a med-free birth or if you plan to breastfeed, then I think the classes geared towards that can be beneficial. Just check with your hospital and also your doctor. Usually there's a list at the doctor's office with a bunch of classes offered
I delivered out of Oakwood in Dearborn and found both the 6 week Childbirth/Parenting and Breastfeeding classes very helpful. Both my DH and I have masters in science education and DH is also an anatomy teacher, we read many books, and I frequented the bump boards, but nothing compared to first hand knowledge from a nurse at the hospital that we were delivering at.
We knew exactly what to expect every step of the way, down to what the car seat inspection lady looks for when they come to your room to inspect the car seat. (We originally bought the wrong winter car seat cover and had to go return it for one they would allow us to take him home in!)
There were topics discussed that we knew about, but I swear, the month before DS was born and the month after, both DH and I must have said, "the nurse at the hospital said this..." about 100 times. She was great and I highly recommend taking a class. I felt very comfortable both going into the birth and taking him home. I knew I was fully prepared.
Best wishes!
Yes, DH and I took the childbirth class offered through Beaumont. Their class is 12 hours, for which you can either take it in 2 Saturday classes or 4 weekday night classes. When we signed up for the class they said that they prefer to have people finish the class with at least 1 month left in your pregnancy.
I recommend you check into what childbirth classes your hospital offers.
I am glad we took the the class because it gave us a lot better idea of what to expect. And I actually used some of the breathing techniques during labor.
