I really want to sleep on my back its the only way it doesnt hurt?? Is it a huge deal if i do? Ive spent the last 6 months sleeping on my side and it would be really nice to sleep on my back tonight??
I've read that your body will let you know if you should roll over to your side. I frequently wake up on my back and have no idea how long I was like that (I always fall asleep on my side). I'm assuming your body will do what it needs and you probably won't be on your back all night.
I don't think it's a big deal. I go to sleep on my side, but always wake up on my back everytime I need to get up and pee. There's no telling how much time I actually spend on my back. So, I think it's fine. Obviously, this is not a medical opinion.
If it is comfy, why not? I can't even do that for more than a few seconds now, it is soooo uncomfortable. As a pp said, your body will tell you if it is okay.
I was worried because no matter how many times I went to sleep on my side I would wake up on my back. My doctor said it's not that big of a deal and she has never heard of anything happening from sleeping on your back. I sometimes put a pillow under my side so I am slightly tilted. They also sell foam wedges for this purpose. She did say that during labor sometimes women's BP goes down so they slip the wedge under.
I don't know if it's a big deal or not but I wake up on my back often. I either wake up because I have to go to the bathroom or because my hands fall asleep. Now that the belly is bigger I guess I sleep with my arms bent toward my chest and they always fall asleep in this position. Maybe that's my body's way telling me to roll over!
No! Its not! Common sense: You will be in distress before the baby will be. However, now that I'm huge I find it uncomfortable to be flat on my back but I can sleep in a recliner.
+ No one told me Gma how she was allowed to sleep when pregnant and she had 3 healthy ones. This fear mongering is sooo out of control.
My midwife has told me my BP and the baby's activity have both been extremely stable so I don't have to worry about it. She said my body will tell me when to roll over, and it does. I just find sleeping on my side makes my hips/knees hurt- even with a pillow or rolled up towel between my legs. I can't lay any one way for long periods of time.
My current favourite sleeping position is on my left side, with my right leg pulled up so I'm kind of sleeping on my belly but not really? I have one pillow "normally" under my head, and a big fluffy one on top of that one that makes it a bit of an incline (yay less heartburn) and is sideways so my chest/head is resting on it- so there's no actual weight on my belly at all, but I'm not completely on my side.
I don't think it's really that big of a deal. I've been told your body sorta knows when to move.. Like you'll get a pain or have a hard time breathing or something. Sometimes I sorta wedge a small pillow under my back'ish area so I'm almost sleeping on an angel.... Not really side. Not totally back... Seems to be pretty good
I'm one of the people whose body has told them not to do that. If I lie on my back for longer than about 2 minutes, I start to sweat and feel like I'm going to pass out. If I were still comfortable on my back, I would totally sleep that way since my hips are so sore.
If you have or are having trouble with constipation, sleeping on your back can slow your bowels.
If you have high BP, sleeping on your back will increase your BP vs. sleeping on your side.
If you feel tingly in your legs, you should flip to your side. Your superior and inferior vena cavas are back there and the weight of the baby can reduce blood flow.
So - if you're good on all those counts, you should be okay.
I asked my doctor about this especially since I always end up on my back and sleeping on my side really hurts my hips, no matter how many pillows, etc. I've tried.
She said it's fine as long as you're not FLAT on your back. So I have pillows propped up against my headboard and sleep in a semi-reclined position and it's LOVELY!
I have actually created a "nest" of pillows that makes me sort of feel like I am floating in an innertube...the propped up pillows on the headboard, then two body pillows, side by side going down the length of the mattress with another pillow across them to keep under my knees. I crawl on top of it all (so my body is actually on the body pillows and not the mattress) and I have been able to sleep so soundly since doing it. The pillows allow me to sleep on my sides, if I want to...I just use the behind the knee pillow between my kness in that case.

I would wake up on my back and it felt so good. Now, it wakes me up b/c I can't breathe.
I'm sure one night would be fine.

I sleep on both sides and my back - I just rotate throughout the night - since I get uncomfortable no matter what side/back I'm on after a while.

this. When I wake on my back, I sometimes have a headache which makes me think I'm lacking some oxygen...

(Did that make sense, at all?)
There are three things to consider:
If you have or are having trouble with constipation, sleeping on your back can slow your bowels.
If you have high BP, sleeping on your back will increase your BP vs. sleeping on your side.
If you feel tingly in your legs, you should flip to your side. Your superior and inferior vena cavas are back there and the weight of the baby can reduce blood flow.
