Dumb Birth Certificate Question

Hello, Ladies! I'm not a big poster and when I do it is usually on 0-3. This is probably a dumb ? but I am going to ask it anyway. Do you not get a birth certificate sent to you after LO is born? My DS was born almost 8 weeks ago and we haven't received one in the mail. I went on the Texas Department of Health Services website and it said you could order one for $22. Do you really have to pay for one? I thought you would get at least on for free and then have to pay for additional certified copies past that.

I am sure this info is probably in the folder I got sent home with from the hospital, but of course I can't find the folder.

TIA!

Re: Dumb Birth Certificate Question

  • Congrats on your LO!

You have to pay (even for the first) and they don't send it, you'll have to go through your county to pick up a copy.

The SS card is automatically sent (you probably already received this if LO is 8 weeks).

  • Yep, you have to pay for it. You can also order it online through the vital statistics office.
  • Yes, you need to pay for it. ?DS was born in Grapevine - each city is different on the price and whether you pick it up or they mail it. ?They mailed us ours. ?FWIW, we ordered two additional copies... so we have three total. ?When DS is on his own when he's older, he can have a copy and we can have copy... and we'll have an additional copy in another fire proof safe just in case. ?Its easier to have an extra one or two on hand and keep them safe to have to order a replacement twenty years from now. ?
  • you don't have to rush to get it ;) "some people" take months... or longer....

  • In NY they mail them to you and it's free, I was waiting for DD's too. After I while I decided to actually read the paper that I signed at the hospital, LOL.  I dreaded going to get it thinking it was going to be a nightmare (once again referring to NY, all dmv and court issues takes HOURS) but I was in and out in 10 mins.

No joke, I just got DS' this October in case they asked for it at the airport. He was 21 months old!
