Nursing to sleep once baby has teeth?

I know for FF babies, you're supposed to clean their teeth before they fall asleep. If you nurse to sleep, how does this work? Does breastmilk have the same effect on teeth? David loves being nursed to sleep and I'm just thinking about what I'm going to do once he has teeth.

Re: Nursing to sleep once baby has teeth?

  • I never knew that about FF babies. I know you're supposed to wipe the gums and teeth of all babies anyway, and that it's a big no-no to let them fall asleep with bottles. I guess I just always assumed that since BM is more easily digested that the baby's saliva will just break it down with no issues.

You pose an interesting question! My DS has teeth and still nurses to sleep and I've never given it a second thought.

  • The antibacterial properties of bm make it less of a problem.

  • Nursing forces the milk to the back of the mouth, so it gets swallowed immediately and doesn't sit on the teeth the way it can if a baby falls asleep with the bottle in their mouth.  The only chance milk from the breast would have of touching the teeth is if the baby fell asleep before swallowing the last mouthful, and they are more likely to spit the mouthful out than to hold it.

You can nurse to sleep for as long as you and the baby want to.  :-)
