WDYT: Cutting back on night time bottle (long)

Sam consistently wakes at 12:30 for an 8oz bottle then eats 8oz less during the day (usually 14 oz between 12:30 and 5am then 20 between 5am and 7pm. Jake eats it all during the day and then sleeps from 7 - 4:45.

DH wants us to start lowering the ounces on Sam's midnight bottle and I'm not sure about it. I say if he's hungry, feed him but DH thinks if he eats less at night he'll eat more during the day. He wants to change the bottle to 6oz for the next few days to see if he'll pick them up during the day and then keep lowering by an oz or 2. The last few oz Sam does seem to drink while mostly asleep, but still he's drinking them. And then another 6oz 4 hours later. I always thought if they are hungry, they should be fed no matter what time it was.

I don't know what to do. Thoughts, please?

  • I have no advice, but man! Your sons look so much older than they are! I think its the hair .... but they are both just so stinkin' cute I don't know how you handle the two of them!!!!
  • Loading the player...
  • I cut back on Web's and it worked. He was just "habit waking." He kept waking up at the same time every night. He was like an alarm clock. He also increased his ounces during the day.

-But be prepared to receive some flack for this. I know I did.

  • Some of the books talk about slowly lowering the ounces in night bottles to help retrain hunger patterns and help them sleep better. I haven't started this but will be talking to the pedi in 2 weeks about starting.
  • Okay.  This should probably be  FFFC, but we started scheduling feedings at 2 months to see what he would do.  Not that we wouldn't have fed him in the middle of the night if he woke up hungry - but if we could feed him more during the day and have him sleep during the night, we would do a skippy dance.  And it worked like a charm.  He was eating 5 oz. bottles (sometimes not finishing them all) every 4-5 hours around the clock.  We started feeding him the same bottles every 3 hours during the day on schedule - so he got that middle of the night bottle during the day.  The first day we tried it, he slept from 10:30 p.m. until 7 a.m.  And the other day, because he wasn't waking up for the 10 p.m. bottle, we decided to stop offering it to him and now he's been sleeping 8:30 - 7ish all week.

So all that to say, I'd try what your DH is suggesting.  He might still wake up for a bottle (in which case, by all means, give it to him) - but he might not...and if you could get both of them to sleep 7 - 4:45, wouldn't that be bliss?

  • C use to take a 5 oz bottle at 2am and the pedi suggested decreasing it and eventually eliminating it. So we gradually decreased it and now she eats a bit more during the day. We started this a few weeks ago and last week she finally started STTN and skipping the 2am bottle. This week she has been up a few times for a 2 oz bottle. Good luck!

  • I would feed him if he's hungry. Gabe is now down to 1 feed at night. I've never tried to stop him. He may not even take the extra milk during the day.

That's my worry. That he'll miss ounces because we are cutting back at night.

A few weeks back G was taking all 5 oz and the sitter said he still sucked at the bottle. I told them to try 6 oz the next day and he didn't finish it (and we wasted a couple of oz of BM :( ) . He was sleeping from 7-2 last week and slept from 7-4 last night...all on his own. It's taken a while to get here! Before that he was waking 2-3 times a night.

You could still try it though, it may work for you?

  • I did this with DD. She wasn't necessarily hungry for the full bottle in my opinion. I gave her a little less for a few nights and gave her the paci after she had a few and she went back to sleep. It took about a week of this and she stopped waking up. If he is visibly crying and wanting more, give it to him. If you think he is just sucking to suck at the end of the bottle, I would try giving the bottle and then the paci for part. Does that make sense? I think I confused myself.

  • I think I would try stepping him down gradually and see what happens.  Even if he doesn't pick up the full 8oz throughout the day, I wouldn't be all that concerned about it, as long as he picks up SOME of it.  Good luck in whatever you decide :o).
  • You can only try.

DD has cut back on a night feeding herself.  She used to eat at 2-3am and then at 5-6am.  Now she eats around 3-4ish and goes til she wakes up for the day and then some.

This.  DS was waking and just sucking then falling right back asleep.  I stopped offering the bottle and I think that is why he is sleeping better.  He still takes one bottle at night...but he actually eats it so I give it to him.

  • no advice b/c your sons are older than mine.  i still feed ds when he wakes up & he eats.  But he has also skipped one of his night feedings enough that I know that while he will eat then if it is offered, he doesn't really need it.
