Babies: 9 - 12 Months

If your LO is not a big eater (FF)

DS has been getting to be a better eater, but he doesn't have a huge appetite that I can give him baby food 3x a day he still get enough formula.

The Pedi told me at his 6 mo appt he should get at least 24oz a day till he was 9 months old. I had to cut back on stage 1 food to get him back on track (somedays he was only getting 16 oz). She said formula is his main souce of nutrition, which I do know about. DS has never been a huge eater, he's a good healthy weight, but not a chunky boy.

Now I can do a stage 2 for breakfast and then 4-6oz (this is about 3 hours after a 6oz bottle when he wakes up). then bottles all day, mostly 6oz every 3 hours and then he can eat 2 stage 1's for dinner (meat and veggie) or stage 2 and stage 1 or 1/2 a stage 1 and then 6oz before bed. He gets just 20-24oz/day.

Several people have told me not to worry about it, just feed him and give him bottles in between as long as he's growing (which he is), if I was BF I wouldn't know how much he is getting anyway...but I can't help but keep thinking what the Dr. said. I would like him to keep adding the solids, he's 7 months old and the better he eats the better he sleeps at night. I'm confused...any experience would be helpful.

TIA

Re: If your LO is not a big eater (FF)

  • DS has always been FF and hasn't been a big eater. He eats 6 oz 5 times per day. Lately he hasn't been finishing some of his bottles. He's around 27 oz per day.

We started purees at 6 months. We initially did it backwards--gave him food and then a bottle. We switched it up now and give him 6 oz at 5 am (or so), 6 oz at 9 am and then 1/2 a jar of puree (sometimes mixed with a little rice cereal), 6 oz at 1 pm, 6 oz at 4 pm with 1/2 jar of puree and 6 oz at 7 ish when he goes to bed. Like I said, sometimes he doesn't finish his bottles.

My pedi said every baby is different. Some have higher metabolisms and some are slower. Some babies don't need as much. I would focus more on baby's growth than how much he's eating. If he's growing fine, don't worry about how much he's eating as long as he's full.

  • I have a light eater and we have struggled at times getting to 24oz a day.  My pedi and a friend who is a pedi told me that as long as we were hitting 20oz plus solids we were ok but to strive for 24oz. We offer 4 6oz bottle s a day and sometimes she won't finish all of the bottle. I always feed a bottle first and then any solids.  Here is our schedule:

    7am - 6oz bottle/ 9am - 2 Tbsp of oatmeal, 3.5oz of fruit and some puffs/ 9:15 to 11amish - nap/ 12:00pm - 6oz bottle/ 12:30pm - 3oz yogurt and 3.5oz of veggies/ 2pm-3:30pm - nap/ 4:30pm - 6oz bottle/ 5:30or6pm - finger food(usually what we are having for dinner) meat, veggies, baked apple chunks, toast, etc./ 7:30pm- 6oz bottle after bathtime and right before bed.

ETA: Our pedi said the most important thing was to watch her growth chart and as long as she was gaining and growing at a steady rate not to push it.  You can't force them to take any more formula.  A has always grown at a rate he is happy with so he is not concerned if we don't hit that magic oz number every day.
