Since we have gone to a more aggressive approach to treating the WM's asthma, I am going to try to make this place as asthma friendly as possible.
- There's nothing I can do about the carpet being here, but I ordered that stuff to put on the carpet to kill the dust mites.
- I already use non-toxic cleaning products and laundry detergent.
- The heat in our apartment is radiatant, so we're good there (no forced air).
- The mattress in his crib is baby friendly (read: plastic) so I don't think there is a problem there.
My asthma is mild and requires almost no treatment. I've never had to launch a stronger attack on it. Any help is greatly appreciated.
Re: Ladies with moderate to severe asthma
Anything soft or upholstered is an issue. Couches, chairs, blankets, pillows, stuffed animals, drapes/curtains. If you don't already have a great vacuum you will need to get one and vacuum the crap out of everything as often as possible. Also washing all soft items you can in hot water and dry on hot.
Do you have pets?
I have very mild asthma and it is only triggered by cigarette smoke and spring time (pollens). So I am really no help except for the fact that I avoid the smoke trigger as much as I can. If you can figure out what triggers his asthma, it can help to avoid it if possible.
The one thing that I notice is really, really hard-core keeping the house clean. Dusting at least twice per week. Make sure your ceiling fans, baseboards, etc are clean. & I clean my cleaning supplies. I wash my dust rags, mop heads, etc at least twice per month.
Honestly, I think you're doing pretty much what you can & doing a great job. The cold gets me every time, so make sure the house is warm enough & humid enough.
I'll keep my thinking cap on & try to remember if there's anything I'm missing!
D smokes, but it's maybe one a night and he takes it outside. He is not allowed to smoke in here.
The smell on someones clothes can set me off. Just a thought.
Same here... does he smell smokey Wee?
Your huz could totally be a trigger with it on his clothes.
Does WM have a bumper? You probably want to wash that once a week. & change his sheets at least a few times per week. & any soft toys he plas with.
Agreed.
I don't think so. He maybe smokes half of it before he gats annoyed and comes back inside and he usually sprays some deodrant on the get rid of the smell. Also, most of the time he takes his clothes right off and goes to bed.
Is there anything else he can do?
He does have a bumper. He has a few small soft toys, too, but not many. I'll have to start doing an off week wash for him. We don't have a washing machine here, so we ususally haul it all to the laundrymat every 2 weeks. Major suckage.
Incense also flares my asthma up as well as the smelly stuff they use at church near Christma. That I can't think of the name of to save my life.
And mine is very mild so any smelly stuff might make WM's worse.
Me too - big time.
If smoke is a trigger he needs to come straight in and shower, washing his hair and all that. The chemicals from smoke stick to everything including his shoes, which he is then wearing into the house I assume. It's a pain but its reality. Spraying deoderant doesn't work and even if he doesn't "smell" like the smoke the chemicals are still on him and being tracked into your home.
This.
Cold air, smoke, dust and exercize all get me. Also watch out for "real" Christmas trees. I used to stay sick through Christmas until my parents realized I was allergic to the tree. Another thinng to be aware of is unpacking the Christmas decorations... I did that last weekend and had a horrible allergy fit and asthma attack - now I have a sinus infection from it.
ETA: perfume, cologne, strong candles, incense and air fresheners also get me sometimes
Like everyone else said, even if he's outside, the chemicals are my trigger. I can tell if someone has been smoking in an outside area nearly 15 minutes later (if there isn't a breeze). I immediately notice and wheeze. It never completely washes out of clothes, either, and I can always get it even if clothes have been washed.
My other major trigger is the weather, and there isn't much you can do there lol.
