Babies: 3 - 6 Months

really PotteryBarn?

Got an email from PB today about their "big sale" on toys, so I took a look. Most of the toys are for toddlers, but I scrolled through anyway.  Then something caught my eye.  A life sized ironing board/fake iron for little girls. I'm too tired to even explain how much that irks me.  I get that some kids like to play "house" and "kitchen" and such (I did as a kid)  but I don't think I would have ever found a fake, life size ironing board and iron entertaining. Not only that but talk about pushing "gender rolls."  I think that is so wrong.

Re: really PotteryBarn?

  • How lame is that, if it's a life sized toy, why not just use a real ironing board??

I know, right?  Just let your kid use yours instead.

  • I thought the same thing when I saw it.  I played house as a little girl but I certainly wasn't fake ironing!

    I know!

  • I dont think its lame and it doesnt bother me. Its not pink, why not buy it for a boy anyway? Just because there is a little girl using it doesnt automatically make it a "girl only" toy. The product description said, " Kids learn that chores can be fun when they mimic what Mom and Dad do around the house."

My DD would probably love that. It doesnt matter what the store portrays, its how you deal with it as a mother that important.

  • Plus, does it really seem fun to move something back and forth across a flat surface??

    lol

    Play kitchen = fun

    Play ironing = sad

I'm sorry, I TOTALLY disagree with you.  The product description has to say "kids" and not "little girls" because otherwise they would be shooting themselves in the foot.  If you can find one person (ever) who as bought this for a boy, or is planning on it ...  well then, color me wrong.  But I'm holding firm on this one.

AND, I do think it matters what the store portrays. They are sending a clear message and I don't agree with it. Wouldn't it be nice as a mother to not have to "deal with it" at this day in age?  I can tell my daughter over and over the way it is ... but the media has a big impact on society and the way our kids will grow up. Unfortunately.

  • Some kids just like to mimic everything their parents do.  SD has her own laundry basket because she likes to help me fold clothes, she has her own sponge because she likes to help with the dishes, her own snow shovel to help in the winter, and a small tool set that she grabs whenever SO is doing something with his tools.

This I get.  That stuff actually sounds FUN.

  • I think ironing sucks (and don't do it) so no way would I expect my kids to find it fun.

    Ironing does suck.

  • Then write them a letter or do something about it if your that offended. My 2 year old brother has a fisher price ironing board...who really cares?

I dont understand how other chores are different then ironing? Almost all those chore toys are aimed at girls. It doesnt make it right but what sets ironing aside from the rest. Beacuse its not "fun"? Its plenty fun for a small child. My guess is you only have a baby and no children yet.

I dont care how firm you are on this, I dont really care what you think at all but if you going to take a stand only on the ironing then I think you should probably take a stand on the rest.
