crazy phone call...re: reality show

i have my own event design company, so that's how this company found me.  they are doing a show about moms who throw over the top parties (they are canada based, but i think it will air on the WEnetwork in the us).  anyway, it sounded interesting.  i always said i wasn't interested in being on tv like that, but i wonder if it would be good for business.  i have to do research and see what the deal is, i think they already have episodes that have aired in canada and somewhere else outside the us).  canadian bumpies, have you seen the show 'party mamas'?...tell me what you know.

there's another bumpie on here who has an event company.  pm me if you're interested and i'll give you more info.

and if there's a west coast florida bumpie who would be interested in being on the mom side, let me know.  i have a few people i know in mind, but if they are not interested and i decide to pursue this, i need backups.

  • I have seen it once, it reminded me of My Super Sweet 16 on MTV a little.  It wasn't bad, it would defiantely be good exposure for your company.  Have you checked out youtube? They have some episode clips on there.
  • Oooh that sounds exciting! Best of luck to you!!
  • I've seen it, it is about ladies who throw very elaborate parties, usually for their kids. It really is a bit like that MTV show, so you know there will be some hissy fits and idiotic comments thrown your way, but your bussiness will get good exposure (I'm sure the show is on all latin america, on cable)

  • I despise that show simply for the people they choose to show on it.  It's always about a mom who (is usually married to the money) throwing a party for her son, daughter, husband, dog, etc and always goes overboard.

There's always some sort of drama (they don't have her costume in the color she wanted) which results in the mom throwing a 2-year old type hissy fit and shouting about how important she is, usually accompanied by the phrase "Do you know who I am?".

In the end, the party is huge and over-the-top and her friends all stand around her oohing and ahhing about what a great job she did.  I think I've only ever seen 1 episode where the intended party recipient was actually happy about the party they received.

I know they mention the designers, suppliers, etc, but frankly I can't remember the name of a single one of them.

Maybe I'm just bitter and wishing I could throw a $30,000 birthday party for my 1 year old.....

  • There is also a show called Platinum Babies.  It is like Platinum Weddings but for Baby and baby showers.  It does air on WE and they have shown a few episodes.  I think it would probably be a really good idea to do it!  It will bring your business a ton of exposure!

My florist for my wedding was on Platinum Weddings, she is now INCREDIBLY hard to book!

  • Hi Ladies!

I'm not usually on this board, but saw this post and had to comment.  I have not seen the show, but reading some of the comments from the ladies it sounds like there will be drama during shooting or they will create drama for the show.

My husband and I were on the Whose Wedding is it Anyways show a few years ago.  After that experience I tell everyone to stay as far away from reality shows as you can unless its like home improvement and your goign to get a ton of free stuff out of it.

When we did the show they created tons of situations with fake drama, and the entire thing was fake.  We had to bring 5-7 outfits per day of shooting to change in to so that it looked like they had filmed this over the course of months before the wedding when really they only came out to film for two days about 3 weeks before the weddign when everything was already taken care of.  they made us act out so many parts.  they would take what we said from a completely different day or situation and edited us to say it while our back was to the camera.

We were so excited when we found out we were on the show, we never looked at the drama part of the show b/c we didn't think about them dramatizing our wedding.  boy did we wish we paid more attention to the show.

What i'm trying to say is just be careful.  They promised us SO SO SO much....we never got ANY of it other than the free dvd of the show.  We thought it would be a great fun experience to look back on, thought we wouldnt have to have a videographer so we would save money, etc. etc.  all it did for us was give us anxiety for the few months after the wedding worried about the show and caused family drama that was all over situations that never happened.

just be careful.  it could be INCREDIBLE for your business or it could really back fire.  I do wish you all the luck in the world with it.  I've heard other people have had better experiences compared to me and my husband.  I hope yours is better than ours.   good luck!!
