To piggy back off of what Leelee asked, I am considering BFing but I haven't decided for sure. I have a co-worker who suggested trying it for a period and then deciding whether its something I would like to continue...with that in mind, which breast pump would you recommend? I'm not sure I want to spend the big bucks on a pump w/o being sure its something I want to do.
Re: s/o BFing...wdyt?
I wouldn't buy a pump until you are sure you want to BF. You won't need one in the beginning, so by the time you do need a pump you will most likely know if it's something you want to continue or not.
ETA: If you did want to go ahead and buy one, you can only return it if the seal on the box is intact.

I'm kind of in the same boat. I have anxiety and depression issues and I'm afraid the stress of bf'ing will lead to some more issues. So we'll see what happens.
My plan is to take it day by day. While I'm in the hospital I plan to drive the LC and nurses crazy making sure latch, hold, and everything else is good. I highly reccomend a bfing class. The LC who taught ours was so sweet and patient with all my questions. She really made me feel at ease. She mentioned that we probably wouldn't want to start pumping for about 6 weeks if possible. By that time, I should know if I want to continue. If I pump I'm going to get the Lasinoh Double Electric. According to Baby Bargains, it is the same thing as the Ameda Purely Yours that they rated an A. It is about $140 I think at Wal-Mart, but I've found it at Amazon and drugstore.com for a little over $100. Our hospital rents pumps, but I think it was about $40 a week, which is more than I want to pay.
Good luck with your decision.
Ladies,
I highly recommend renting the pump from your hospital at first for all - whether you definitely plan to bf or if you are unsure. A friend suggested the same for me and I was glad I took her advice. I was all gung ho about bf and I ended up EP (exclusively pumping) for 2 months. I was disappointed in myself that latching didn't work out and for not pumping longer - but it proved to be the best decision for me. That being said, the $400 in gift cards that I would've spent on the breast pump has been really nice to help w/ formula and diapers.
My disclaimer: this is not at all an attempt to discourage anyone from BF. I'm very pro bf and like I said, wish I could've gone longer. Renting just makes sense in the beginning because the pump is a huge investment and like someone said earlier, you can't return it used. Rent for at least a month until you get in the groove then buy the pump you want.
Oh, and I just saw that $40 a week for renting - that's unbelievable! St. Vincent's (Birmingham) rents for $2 a day for the first 2 months then $1 day for the remainder of the time. You must do at least 30 days if you rent.
