Recommend your pump (electric or manual)

Hi ladies!  I'm not sure which pump to choose, but would love your suggestions.  It can be manual or electric.  I will have to pump at work and would love a quiet (as quiet as they can be) pump. TIA!

Re: Recommend your pump (electric or manual)

  • For everyday pumping, I really like the Medela PISA.

I also purchased a hand pump that I took with me when we traveled in case of date night or whatever.  I had the medela hand pump - it was about $25?  and it really came in handy.  I kept my electric pump at work all the time so liked being able to hand pump occassionally at home too.

  • We got the Medela PISA, too.  Obviously we haven't used it, but it came highly recommended by friends, Baby Bargains and user reviews.  On a side note, my ILs bought it for us.  That was a little awkward...
  • Oh, I used an older Model PIS and it was much louder than the the PISA.  The girl who shared the room with me had a PISA and it was much much quieter than mine :)
  • I also have the Medela PIS and I have never had a complaint about it. It's worked well and I have the backpack model, so I don't feel wierd about bringing it to work everyday. (We don't have a locker room or anywhere I could keep it at work.)

I will warn you.. the Medela pumps aren't cheap. But if you plan on working full time and will pump regularly, I think a double electric pump is well worth the investment. I can't imagine pumping manually multiple times a day.

Also, I know that technically you aren't supposed to use a pump that was previously used by someone else. But, I got my Medela pump on Craig's list and then bought all new tubing, attachments, bottles, etc. It works great and I only spent $100. I think Sarah was lucky enough to get one handed down to her from family?

Anyways... definitely think Medela is the way to go.

  • Lydia, great point.  I second the used pump, as long as you get new parts.  and you can get the motor tested as well
  • Be sure to check with your medical insurance company as well...BCBS remibursed 80% of the cost of my pump because I'd met my major medical deductible.  For a $270 pump, that was HUGE for me.

Ohh, I will check on that!

Thanks so much ladies!  I'll check out the Medela PISA.  The double pump sounds good.  I think I read that both BBs need to be pumped at the same time OR baby needs to eat from both during a feeding.  Is that right?

That is right, to make sure both are being emptied sufficiently
