What does a sty look like and how are they treated?

DCP called when I went to lunch and told me Mitchell has been rubbing his right eye almost non stop all morning. She said it looks like he has a sty on his eyelid. I went by to see how he was doing. It looks like a teeny tiny pimple. Is that a sty? If so, do I need to take him in? How are they treated, or are they usually just left alone?

  • Sounds like a sty. I get them all the time. they are irritating as all get out. but try to have LO not rub the eye. A warm wash cloth helps. There are products OTC to get but before using anything like that I would check with a dr first.

But whatever you do do NOT try to pop it.

  • I used to get them often. They can look like a little pimple, or they can just look like a red swollen bump. There is no cure so you would probably be wasting your time to take him in (but obviously call just in case if you are concerned). You can try to do warm compresses on his eye to help it drain. There is also an over the counter med called Sty that can help with the itching, but I am not sure if it is safe for babies. If it continues to get bigger then definitely call.

ETA- be sure to wash your hands and LO's hands A LOT when touching or dealing with it. They are contagious. Definitely don't share towels or anything that might have touched his eye.

  • That's pretty much what a sty is.  My dh is just now getting rid of a couple of sty-like growths (they were called something else, but basically treated the same way as a sty) that he's had since late July.  He ended up needed to get them lanced and get steroid shots.

Make an appt with your little guy's ped, who may refer him to an ophthalmologist.  In the mean time, hold very warm, wet compresses to his eyelid as often as he'll let you.

  • My oldest used to get them chronically. He got them on his lower eyelid and they were impacted and affected his vision. He finally had one surgically removed (with real anethstesia and all...) and hasn't had one since; knock wood. My father told me that he had them chronically as a little boy as well...
  • Tea bags also work too. Boil some water, add a tea bag (black tea) to get the tea bag warm and wet, and apply tea bag to sty. The tea has some properties that'll help reduce the sty.?
