TTC After a Loss

NTTCALR - For those who color your hair...

I got an estimate for cut and color today.  I decided to stop doing Multi-color or color and highlights in an effort to trim my hair expenses and received the rate below from the salon (The person that does my hair does a really good job)

Cut - $35

Color (1 overall color) - $75

Please note that I do live in High Cost of Living Area.   Do you think the prices are a bit steep?  I thought about dying my own hair from a box but not sure about that?

Re: NTTCALR - For those who color your hair...

  • Okay....let's see.

Last time I went in.  (I live in the Midwest - not a high cost of living)

I got an all over color, highlight and a cut.  And it was $110.  Which I thought was high.  But I pay it, cause it's a great salon.

    Hope that helps you decide.

  • hmmm...my all over color is $55 and a cut is $40.

This is at a nice salon in Sacramento. Of course Sacramento is not as high cost as Santa Cruz I think.

  • I pay $175 for highlights and cut (includes blow-out) and I am in Dallas (I paid the same in Chicago too).

Looking at everyone else pays is making think I should find a new salon!

  • I guess I get mine done pretty cheap....dh should see this thread so he'd get off my back about it!

I go to a salon that charges $85 (I think) for cut & color. I've been going to this one girl there since I was a freshman in hs and she had just got her license----her hubby also works w/my hubby so she only charges me $65-$70 for a cut & color. (Multi color---I do dark blond/a couple shades darker than my natural and then light blonde/highlights on top).

  • Thats about normal! but if you have different colors in your hair right now i wouldnt recommend doing it yourself. get it done the first time and then once its all one color..if you feel confident u can you do it than do it yourself the next time.
  • Last time I went in I got two different colors and a cut and it was $85.  I don't live in a high cost living area.  I have shorter hair.

My DH is not happy at all with what I pay for my hair service.

Your price is the price I was hoping to pay for the one color and cut.  My salon was charging me $125 in the past for cut, mutli color or color and highlights.  She just remodeled her shop and changed the price.  Now she wants to charge me $180 for cut and multi-color or color and highlights.  Or, she wants to charge me $110 for one color (which is a much easier and faster process on her part) and a cut.

  • I pay $70 for cut & color, but  Iknow that's a steal.
  • That's pretty close to what I pay for a cut and hi-lights.

That is a good point!  My highlights currently  are very light compared with the rest of my hair for a more  dramatic look.

Embarrassed Oh, I should have said those were partial highlights - only the top few layers.  When I got full highlights (1 color) and a cut back in March it cost the same.

  • I don't dye my hair, but when I lived in Fort Lauderdale, I paid $60 just for a cut and blow out and I only have shoulder length hair. Color went from $60 and up.

Now, I pay like $35 and DH is a much happier person.

  • Hmm... I'm the odd one out.  My cut and color costs about $5.  Just the cost of the color!  But then, my little sis just got her cosmotology license this past spring.  I'm her guinea pig and she does whatever the heck she wants with my hair.  I have no say in it except about what color I want it.

  • That sounds pretty average, especially if you're happy with the results and are confident in your stylist's abilities.  I pay $25 for a cut including tip b/c I go to my friend's house to have it done.

I used to get the full multi-color highlights and lowlights, but now I dye all one color at home.  I use Clairol Perfect 10 and I'm really happy with it.  I always watch the Sunday paper for the ads because every few weeks there's a coupon for it good for a couple bucks off.  That way I never pay full price for it (even if it's only $11).

  • Oh my goodness.  I love you girls, and I'm sure your hair is great, but I CANNOT BELIEVE PEOPLE PAY THIS MUCH FOR HAIR!!!   Insane.  I'm sure you have fabulously colored hair w/o getting it dyed.... I say we all do a hair coloring fast to save money for whatever TTC costs you might have.

Sorry... I know I probably live under a rock.  Resume ridiculous spending.

ETA: how often do you have to get it done?

  • I am coming in late on this one, but I color my own hair and have since I was 18!  I have never had a problem with box color.  It costs me like $8 every 8 weeks.  :)  Super cheap and its so easy.  I do recommend if you color it stick with one brand dont mix them up and dont use the cheapo stuff it will come out of your hair.  I have used Preference by Loreal for years!

  • Wow - I pay soooo much for my hair.  I live in an extremely high cost of living area though and don't take risks with my hair due to some bad experiences in the past (orange does not equal blonde!).

I pay $140 for a partial highlight, $90 for all over color and I think around $70 for a cut.  When I do it all at once and add tips, I pay around $350!

But, I usually spread these things out so I don't have to pay that much all at once.  I will NOT be showing DH this thread - he'd have a cow if he realized how much less expensive it could be.

  • If you're cost of living is high, I would say that's a GREAT price.  I pay $135 for haircut, foils all over (medium hair), and eyebrow wax in Central PA.  I puffy-heart my salon and stylist.
