Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Success stories with 18 month old in a big bed

We will be moving to an apartment while our house is being built when my dd is 18 months old (plus a week or two).   The house will be done mid-May and we are due on June 13th.    We will either need to have the crib with us and her big girl mattress in storage, or the big girl mattress with us and her crib in storage.  If we start her out in the big girl bed, we will put the mattress directly on the floor.

What would you do.  With the craziness of the move in May and all the changes, I feel like it will be too much on her to do it then.  We could transition after the baby is here (will be in a p&p) but I don't want to kick her out of her bed when the baby is here!  Any success stories at 18 months plus?

  • We moved DS to his toddler bed around 19 months.  He has been sleeping there ever since!  We made sure that his room was safe for him to be in there alone.  We also put a baby proofing thing on his door knob.  For the first couple of weeks, I would rock him to sleep.  This was only b/c he wouldn't stay in the bed when we put him down.  Now, we do our bedtime routine, and he gets in bed, we read him a book, say good night and he goes to sleep.  For the first 2 weeks, he did get up a few times during the night.  So, just be prepared to have to put her back to bed.  It takes a couple of weeks, but he got the hang of it pretty quickly.  GL!

  • We took the front gate off of Lucas' crib at 15 months so he got use to an "edge" that was very low to the ground.  At 19 months his twin-bed was done and he has been in it for the past couple of weeks.  It is high off the ground, and he has had NO issues transitioning.  He has "slid" out of bed 2 times - gets his legs too far off and then slumps down to the floor, but he has never fallen off and he has completely figured out the edge now.  We skipped the mattress on the floor stage.
  • We converted DD's bed at 15 months.  We didn't really need a "transition" phase.  The first night or two she got up and came into my bedroom.  After that, she knew to sleep in her own bed.  I did have to do some additional baby proofing to ensure that her room was safe though.  Also, I put a gate over the stairs and close the door to every room on the floor except my bedroom so that she will not get into anything at night.

  • a friend on my local boards did it about a month ago with her daugther who was about 17 months because she's having her baby tommorrow so she wanted to transition her before the baby and she did a great job. there was a period where a few nites a week she'd get up a few times and try and play but is doing pretty good with it from my understanding.

  • That is tricky.  For us moving from the crib to the bed hasn't been a problem at all, I would just be worried about doing it when there are so many other changes going on.   How long until you move?  If you've got a little time (even just a few weeks) I'd go ahead and do the move NOW so when you get to the apartment the bed isn't new to her anymore.
