Full moon causing labor for anyone??

One of my friends told me that some women are affected by full moons and apparently they can cause labor. She said it did for her and six other women checked into the hospital within two hours after her. Not sure I'm buying it.

Anyone else hear anything like this??

Re: Full moon causing labor for anyone??

  • It's true. Ask any nurse or doctor, they will tell you they always have extra staff on full moons because weird things happen and lots of babies are born!

I know a lot of people who went into labour on a full moon too!

Interesting. One of my other friends always gets her period on a full moon, so I guess this isn't totally out of the question.

  • I had a horrible backache last night, I was totally worried I was going into labor! Thank goodness I didn't.

  • Not working for me.  MW appt today and I have not even started to dilate.  MW said they were gearing up for a busy night - she said they are always busy during full moons

  • one bumpie is on hosptial bed rest and posted last night that a typical night has had 1-3 ladies come in if that and last night there were 14!   so either the full moon or something really good was happening back in late Feb/Early March!!!!
  • Yep, I've heard that.

I wish it was true for me...

  • I just found out that I'm due on a full moon (jan 30) so I did a little research and found out that I was also born on a full moon- interesting! Maybe that means LO will come right on schedule ?

  • I was born on a waxing crescent moon.
  • I've heard it, not working for me.

    Such crap.

All a full moon is is that you see the entire half of the moon lighted by the Sun. That's it. Some people think the tidal forces are greater. Also crap. The moon is sometimes closer to us than others, but that has nothing to do with the full moon.

Hospitals and police departments might claim more action the night of a full moon, but they don't seem to notice the phase on another action-packed night.

    Wow.

Had you paid attention even in your earliest elementary science classes, you would know that it's not crap.

There are differences in the gravitational pulls (which does affect tides, since you mentioned that one) with the different stages of the moon.  (among other things)

That was me! And it is super busy again tonight!

And an update on the births from yesterday - Normal births per day are about 2 per day or so. They had 12 yesterday.

It has to do with barometric pressure. This is what my nurse said yesterday.

  • Not yet...but I'm hoping :)  I really want this baby girl to be born!!!

The theory seems to be that just as how full moons affect the tides, they effect all water - including the water in our bodies - which includes the water in the amniotic sac.  Therefore, the reason why more women have babies on full moons seems to be that more women have their water break on a full moon.

I read an article where a mid-wife said that if your due date is a couple of days before or after a full moon - you can bet that you'll end up delivering on the night of the full moon.

There is also evidence that a lot of women have more false labor - i.e. BH contractions - during a full moon...but that doesn't make quite as much sense to me as the water breaking thing.

lol i looked that up and told my mom. my grandmother likes to joke about that superstition.  i'm due on the 28th of jan.  everyone keeps saying i'm gonna have him on the 30th which is my mom's birthday...yeah, we'll see

  • I was going to be induced on 8/21/05 but the moon was full 2 days before that and they couldn't fit me in.

There is a full moon tonight and the one closest to my EDD is 12.31, I'll take it.
