thoughts on "elf on a shelf"? anyone has anything similiar?

just wondering if anyone has it for their 18+m old to use as a family tradition.. i think its a cute idea, but a little weird for some reason.. i think its because i dont like the actual elf.. thinking of getting a "cuter" one and having the same story/tradtion to it.

Thoughts?

  • What is it?!?

I saw it in the window at the bookstore but didn't search it out once I was inside.

It looked like a creepy elf in a book. WTF?

  • we do elf on a shelf at the daycare i work at because we have a serious horrible listening problem. i found a cute elf fabric/plush ornament at joann's that is our elf, and our elf brought along a snowman (beanie baby) for help..it's that bad.....but getting better
  • I think 18mo is a little young. The concept would be lost on my son. I think 3 or 4 is a better starting age for it.

    What is it?!?

The story is that Santa sends an elf to your house so the elf can report back about who is being naughty or nice.  :-)  Each night, the elf reports back to the North Pole and then comes back, so each morning your LO(s) have to figure out where their elf friend is perched for the day.  The typical rules are that no one can touch the elf or his magic will wear off--which is why it's on a shelf or somewhere out of reach.

I think it's a cute idea.  My niece and nephew are 4 & 6 and love it!  We have one and Hadley looks around for it when I ask her where her elf is. She always claps and gets excited when she finds her.

    Ok, got it. Thanks :)

I think I might have to save this for later (for like 4 years later...) ;)

  • We are doing it.

Very loosely now, but I want it to be a tradition when he is older and he understands. It's probably trendy, but I think it's cute :)

  • I really don't like this thing at all.  The elf is creepy-looking and the idea of a spy for Santa is icky to me.

I can see that but it doesn't seem any creepier than the whole Santa thing itself to me.  We're all just used to celebrating the thought of an obese man breaking into our houses via chimney...

  • My husband hates those things.  I have a few of the Annalee elf things and they freak him the hell out :)

Well, we're probably going to low-key Santa, too.  My husband isn't crazy about any of it.
