How do you get a two year old to stop nose picking?

I really didn't think it was a problem because he usually just does it to be funny, and we tell him not to pick his nose, of course. I have never caught him picking just to pick.

Today, they were both playing in their room for a bit and I checked on them after about ten minutes...and Miles had blood streaming out of his nose. He didn't get hurt because I know he would have cried. I looked at his fingers and, sure enough, his index finger on his dominant hand was covered in blood. He picked until he bled!

What do I do?

  • just keep moving his hands away.  It will stop.

  • well...

DS first had an ear grabbing issue. had to touch each one. all the time. ALL THE TIME. we decided to ignore it totally and even asked his teacher to do the same. it stopped 95%.

now we're into hand sucking. believe me: I want to say something. I reallllly want to. but I just don't think it will help. I think it's too much work to make it into a positive thing (like "if you have a dry hand all day, you'll get a...") and I think making it negative will only be negative attention.

toddler habits can suck. my friend's child is a major nose picker/eater and she addresses it all the time and it is soooo bad now. I know it's very hard to ignore, but in the end...I would. ugh, I know, it's so ...yucky!

  • Audrey has her finger in her nose all.the.time. I hear it's just a phase, but it's so gross. When I catch her, I have her fold her hands in her lap.

Ditto this. DS is 3 and still picks and picks. It's nasty. I basically just ignore it. Nothing helps.
