Ok, who's got a Flip and how do you like it?

So Santa may or may not be bringing me a new little camera this Christmas. I'd like something smaller than my DSLR to just throw in my purse/diaper bag when I don't want to tote around the bigger camera. I never really thought about the Flip but it's definitely an idea since then I could also take some video. How's the quality of the pics? What do you like/dislike about the Flip? Any other advice/comments?

  • LOVE it!  Sooooo easy to use!  Soooo easy to upload on my blog and share with family.  We don't have HD so the quality is so-so.  But I love everything else about it.

  • LOVE IT. However, it is video...It sounds like you are taking about still photos?

  • I don't have a Flip, but do love my Canon PowerShot SD780 IS!!!  It's seriously the size of a credit card & only 1/2 inch thick.  All of the videos on my blog were taken with a similar Canon p&s.
  • Ditto on the Canon Powershot if you want still photos with video capability.

Also, I love the Flip (and was hoping to get one until Apple announced that the new iPod nano now comes with video!!)  Apple makes video editing so seamlessly easy, and I think it'd be so cool to have a nano JUST for pics and video alone...not even mentioning that it's a super cool music player too.

  • we have a flip and i like it but the software interface is not that great.  Definitely not apple-like.  The videos themselves are great though and the device is easy to use.

But it doesn't really take still pics. You can do screen captures but that isn't going to get you something worthy of printing out I don't think.

You might be better off with a nicer point and shoot that does video instead.  we used to use ours a lot for both photos and video but now just do the flip and our DSLR.

  • I have a flip and I love love love it. But it is only video not still shots. I need to use it more, it does a great job of capturing Darrian's fun little stuff.

  • We have one (a non HD model) and it's OK. Honestly, I prefer taking video with our Canon Point & Shoot camera. The quality is better. I recently had the opportunity to take the exact same shot with both the Flip and the Canon P&S, and the Canon was notably better.

I don't like the fact that the Flip uses standard AA batteries. I would have expected a camera like that to use a rechargeable battery instead.

I also would NOT recommend this camera for still photos. You can't do much with it and looks terrible in low-light situations.

What I do like is how easy it is to take movies off of it, and how intuitive it is to use. To record, you only need to press two buttons.

Still, for me, I'd rather spend that money on a different type of product. If you're interested in a small digital video camera, I've heard good thigns about the Panasonic ZS3.

  • Ava - the newer models have a built in battery. we have 2 flips, the original and the HD. they are awesome, quality on HD video is awesome. although I must admit that except for trips, our flip vids are pretty much obsolete since i got my DH the new iphone which has video just as high quality.

  • Oh I didn't realize it was video only...I am looking for something that does still photos and video. I guess I am back to the drawing board. Thanks for the input and the Flip might not be out of the running just yet! ;)
  • We have a Canon point and shoot, it is a few years old (got it before P was born), but I love it and it takes great videos!
  • I have a Flip for vids and a canon power shot 990IS for still photos. I love them both but someone on the Nest said her Flip died after 8 monhts and the warranty was finished and the company was really difficult about it , I think finally sent her another one. I guess when you plug in the new one to your PC the old videos erase so if they are not backed up, big disaster. Also she said then she read online that lots of folks had the same issue.

I love my Canon as well but nothing beats a DSLR ! I wish I knew how to do all the manual adjustments.

  • A-mazing! Even I can use it and upload and save the videos and so tiny. The HD is bigger so I like the non-HD and think the quality is great
