Pregnancy Acne...

because the m/s, nausea, barfing and gas pains weren't enough... I have been blessed with a lot of breaking out. When not pg I have quite good skin, but I keep getting big zits around my chin area and then I have all these itty bitty dots that blend with the skin on my forehead.

What can I do for this? What (if anything) will help??

Re: Pregnancy Acne...

  • My derma prescribed Finacea (safe during pregnancy) and it has been working so far.  I had pregnancy acne with my previous two children.

  • I too have the acne problem. For me, it's mostly on my chest, but I have been getting more zits on my face and hair line. I've been doing quite a bit of research on this (I have not had my Dr. Appointment yet...next week, yay). What I've found is that you can use products with Benzoyle Peroxide which means many of the over the counter products and ProActiv are OK. However, Salicylic Acid is a No-No. This is the same stuff in asprin so it can cause miscarriage and other problems. Just be sure to check the products to make sure that they contain Benzoyle Peroxide and NO Salicylic Acid and you'll be fine. Benzoyle Peroxide is a more drying than SA so it may take some getting used to, but your skin will get used to it (at least mine did). Hope this helps :)
  • my face is a war zone right now.?

seriously - even my daughter is concerned for me. :-P?

  • I've been off BCP since April and my face was fine.. then about 2 months ago, it exploded. It's bad when people actually stare and say stuff like - "Oh wow, are your pregnant? you're face looks awful!" But the weird thing is that  wasn't pregnant at the time ... and it definitely has not gotten any better now that I am pregnant!!
  • I've always had acne... so I feel like a pro.  LOL  I use Cetaphil wash and lotion on my face.  And then from time to time I'll use benzoyl peroxide 2.5%.  I can't use it everyday though because it dries me out... so it's all about balance.

My DH has actually told me that my face looks great now that I'm pregnant. Hah!!  I guess maybe, for once, these hormones are working in my favor!

PS - While salicylic acid may be harmful... it's like anything else during pregnancy.  If you use a tiny bit it's not bad.  I've got this confirmed by both my midwife and a doctor friend of mine.  The only time it's really harmful is if you cover your entire face with it every day.
