Pregnant after a Loss

Dental hygienist vent/trauma (long)

I've been going to the same dental office for a number of years w/good experiences.  Today, I saw a hygienist I'd only met once before.  She looked over my chart & noted my current pregnancy as well as my history of losses.  (I'd had the misfortune of m/cing between visits in the past, which is how this was noted.)

While I had my mouth open & was being worked on, she proceeded to talk about my m/c's, noting that my job stress must have been an issue!  WTF!!!!!  This is a dental visit, not an medical, OB or a therapy appt!  I couldn't say anything due to being appalled at her even bringing up this traumatic issue while I'm currently pregnant, let alone being a captive audience because of all the implements in my mouth!

She eventually changed the topic to a friend of hers who had pre-term labor at 29 wks (about where I am!) & another friend whose baby was born w/problems that required NICU & 5 surgeries to correct.

Once she stopped talking about pregnancy-related issues, the rest of the visit was fine.  I'm still feeling rather traumatized & upset about her assumptions & nerve in discussing my losses & stirring up grief issues for me.

Why don't people have the sense to keep intrusive & inappropriate comments to themselves????

  • Yikes! Some people just do not realize how awful the things they say are.  I'm sorry you had to go through that.

  • Wow, tht was rather inappropriate of her to be talking about.  Some people just don't realize they sound smarter with their mouth shut!  I'm sorry you had to deal with that at your appointment.

  • I agree with PP that she was so out of line!  How awful!

Maybe you can bring it up to the Dentist himself and just politely let him know that your visit was a bit uncomfortable because of the assumption that it was ok to bring up or discuss your personal life.  That's something for YOU to bring up if you so chose, not for her.
