Moving to Tampa

Hi everyone!  My husband is a software engineer and just got a job at MacDill.  They want him there by the 13th, so we're having to move into a one bedroom corporate apartment until we can find a house.  Can anyone recommend good places to look? DH found a house online that he liked in Seffner, but I haven't heard a lot of good about the area.  Brandon/Riverview, maybe?

Also if you could recommend your pediatrician, that would be wonderful, since DD will need her four month checkup abut two weeks after we get there.

Thanks!

Re: Moving to Tampa

  • Hi! I live right outside of Brandon, in Valrico. It's really nice over this way, and not so busy like living right in Brandon. My in-laws live in Seffner and actually have never had any problems, but I'm not exactly sure of the neighborhood your hubby found the house! I have friends in Riverview that love that area also, so I think you're definitely looking in the right areas, you may just have to go visit some houses and see what the neighborhoods are like. As for a pedi, my baby girl is 2 months and I love her Dr, Dr. Hosemann. We go to the Brandon location of Pediatric Healthcare Alliance, next to Brandon Hospital. They have several locations, though in case you don't move to this area. The office next to St. Joe's Hospital has great Dr's as well, my friends have their kids seen at that location. Anyways, I hope I've helped some...if you have any other questions, feel free to ask!

  • I just moved to Riverview from the Seffner area.  There are some good parts and some really bad so there is no way to know unless you have a specific address of the house and then check it out.  There are alot of trailer parks around there and an area nn "the fruit bowl" (all the streets are fruit named) which I hear has an abnormally high concentration of pedifiles/sex offenders.  On the other hand my friend lives in a great neighborhood over there walking distance to schools.  I would just take your time checking it out.  Brandon, Valrico, Riverview are all great suburban areas with tons of options.  Just make sure your husband does a trial morning drive to MacDIll because in the wrong location he can double his commute with bad traffic.

    Welcome to the area!

  • The Riverview area is really growing.  I live in South Riverview almost to Apollo beach.  There are several neighborhoods with great deals on homes - Panther Trace, SouthPointe (where I live), South Fork, Summerfield.  The area is under new construction to widen the roads and build lots of new restaraunts and a wholesale club - Sams.  Its is a very quick drive to Macdill and other areas of Tampa/Brandon.  I can make to the Macdill area in about 20-30 mins in traffic.

I would not recommend the actual Brandon area because traffic can be awful even when its not rush hour.  I would also stay away from the North Tampa area since it is the complete other end of Tampa from MacDill.  If you want a  trendy place to live and be very close to Macdill then you can check out South Tampa (SoHo), Davis Island areas.  Losts of shopping and trendy places to eat but very expensive.

BTW.. you might get more responses by posting this on the Nest local board - West Coast Florida.  There are a ton of Nesties in the Tampa area.

  • I agree with the other posters. I live in South Riverview also and love it. It's growing a lot, but there are great deals on houses and its pretty quick access to Macdill. I personally, think Brandon is too busy and would not want to live there. It's great for shopping/eating though...

We live in South Fork (builder was Lennar homes). My DH is an engineer at Macdill also, it takes him about 30 minutes to get to the base, although he works later in the day so he misses the traffic.

We have also live the Carrollwood area, which is really nice, but it gets really busy over there. We also like being close to the water here.

I don't have any personal experience with pediatricians so I can't help you there, but due to my work I know of many good pediatricians in the brandon/riverview area. Feel free to PM me if you have any more questions!

    TTC#1 with PCOS since 3/2009 2 surgeries to remove dermoid 7 medicaid cycles=BFN 3 IUI's=BFN IVM= BFP Twins- missed m/c @ 9weeks
  • Im going to agree. Im in Apollo Beach but we are moving to Bloomingdale (valrico) brandon area. Good schools Riverview is nice too. All convenient to the AFB via the crosstown. As for pediatricians, i HIGHLY recommend Nadal Pediatrics. They are awesome and Dr Kanarek is youngish and figured out a prob with my son no one else could. They rock!

  • I live in Fort Myers, but my husband lived in Tampa for 13 years before. The best advice I can give you is to take it one house at a time. One of the posters above said Seffner had good and bad parts...you'll find this is true for all areas in and around Tampa Bay. You'll see million dollar homes right around the corner from run down trailer parks, it's kinda strange. Find a good realtor that knows the area and make sure they understand what your needs are.

Anyway, if you're worried about the commute, MacDill is right off the end of the Crosstown Expressway, so you'll want to stay with Brandon, Valrico, Seffner, Riverview, or even South Tampa. Do what you can to avoid the I4/275 interchange (affectionately known as "malfunction junction") during rush hour.

Other than that, you'll love living in Tampa! I can't recommend a pediatrician, but I can tell you that once your DD gets a little older, there will be plenty of super fun places to take her around town. MOSI, the florida aquarium, Busch Gardens, Adventure Island, NHL, NFL, MLB, local parks are everywhere, etc, etc. Oh, and the best place to eat in Tampa is called La Teresita: Delicious, cheap latin american food and the best cafe con leche in town. Trust me, you'll love it. Hope that helps!

  • Thanks everyone!  My husband will be in Tampa a couple of weeks before me so that we're not trying to squeeze into a hotel room or board our dogs, so he's going to see how the morning drives are. I think most of the houses we're interested in looking at are in Brandon, but we'll see what happens.  I'm just excited to live close to Disney and Busch Gardens! DH wants another baby, like, now, though, so I may not get to enjoy them for a while.

  • We just moved to Tampa from Baltimore. My husband works from home and I work near the airport. Originally, we were looking for homes in the Lutz area, but we just put in an offer on one in Riverview. It is in the Lake St. Charles neighborhood. You might want to check out that area. It is really nice!

I am also searching for a pediatrician, but need one that as rights at St. Joe's.
