advice needed from knitters

So my mom has picked up knitting, so I thought I would get her something knitting related for her birthday (12/22).  So far she has made Alyssa a sweater and some longies, but she just kind of searches for patterns on the internet or uses the one from the yarn package.  She has had to buy several sizes of needles for these different packages. (I hope this all makes sense, I am not a knitter!)  Is there anything knitting related that you would love to have? A book of patterns? Particular yarn (I would think this would be project specific and have no idea what she'd work on next)?

Re: advice needed from knitters

  • i would suggest the set of interchangeable circular needles by knitpicks personally - it sounds like she's doing projects done in the round and i've coveted the set for a while..

knitting is tough like that - at least crochet you really have just the different hook sizes and that's it - knitting you have regular needles in all the sizes, dpns in all the sizes and then circs are just crazy with the different cord lengths etc.

that said - if those are more spendy than you're lookign for (why they are still coveted and not owned by me) i don't know that i have any one pattern book specifically that i would want but finding one in a store that will allow you to flip through the projects so you can pick one with things you think would be fun to make is a good idea.  also direct her to ravelry where there are loads of free patterns to be searched for.  :-)

  • I think the set of interchangeables is a good idea but so is a book of patterns.  The book is the only thing I asked for for Christmas.
  • interchangeable needles would be nice, otherwise a nice case for storing needles, some cute stitch markers would be nice.  Check etsy for both of these.

My favorite books are elizabeth zimmerman - classic knitting style for adults and kids, the knitters almanac or knitting without tears are great.

    GL!

  • I don't want to invest too much as I'm not sure if this is a lasting hobby or a passing fancy.  Thanks for the book recs though, that may be the way to go.

    This.  :)  I'd love.

  • How many stitch markers does one need?
  • Some sets I've seen on etsy have anywhere from 5-8, this would be plenty to get started.  Only time I've ever used more is for a huge complicated blanket.

  • I saw a pretty set of 4 but most other sets seemed to have more, that's why I asked.  I'm so clueless!

good idea.  in this case i think that maybe a fun pattern book, some stitch markers, and a cute little case for needles or a bag to carry projects on the go (if she's that type of crafter) is a better bet than investing in my coveted interchangeables.  save that till next year and see if the hobby sticks!  :-D
