Babies: 0 - 3 Months

No pee only poop

I am a paranoid new mom.  My baby is only a few days old, but I am worried about her getting dehydrated or lethargic.  I am feeding her about every 2-3 hours, but she has had only 1 pee diaper all day and about 5 poopie ones.  Should I be worried about the number of pee, or lack there of?

Re: No pee only poop

  • Are you sure baby isn't peeing AND pooping in the poop diapers?  Also, if you're using disposables sometimes it's hard to tell if they "just" peed in them.  Sometimes you can tell by the weight of the diaper (haha)....  I don't KNOW but I would guess that if baby is pooping, they're getting enough food.  It's not like an adult where they need to drink water to by hydrated - it all comes from the same source, right?  Just a guess though.

  • Are you sure the poop diapers are just poop and no pee?  We weren't sure in the hospital but the nurse showed us to feel for "heaviness."  We use Pampers Swaddlers too which have the color change strip to tell if they're wet, that helps a ton too.

  • Is she getting BM?  DD pooped a TON in the beginning.  Sometimes it sorta hid the pee.  Maybe she's going, but you're not seeing it as well?  Just a thought.

  • My DS did this the first few days too. He was fine. After the first week we started to see just pee diapers on top of the poop ones.

  • Yes, you should be worried and call your pediatrician ASAP.  I think they are supposed to have at least as many wet diapers as the number of days old they are until they are about 7 days old, and then it should be about 6-8 wet diapers a day from then on.

I was also feeding my baby every 2-3 hours, and she had gained weight at her 1 wk appt. after coming home from the hospital, so I thought everything was going great.  When we went back to the doctor for her 2 wk checkup, she had actually lost weight.  She had been having less pee diapers than poop (I think it was somewhere around 4 pee/6-8 poop per day) for a couple of days, and I wasn't ever really told that there really should be about 8 pee diapers a day, and that having lots of poop wasn't good enough.  It turns out that she wasn't actually eating at the breast very much when I was feeding her... and she didn't cry for food, but was actually really sleepy... we just thought that she was a particularly good baby.  I wasn't in tune to what I should look for to know that she wasn't effective at the breast.  Not enough pee diapers indicates dehydration, which usually means the LO is not eating enough.  Call your doctor so you can check it out before she has any other issues.

  • We actually met with the ped this morning for her first check up.  They weighed her and she weighed the same as what she weighed on Sunday so she hasn't lost any weight.  We mentioned the poop and she asked if it was still meconium or if was changing to yellow and we told her it was turning yellow.  She told us just to keep and eye one it. We have the diapers that change color and we started checking after our appointment.  She had the one wet diaper today.  I guess we will keep an eye on it tonight.

We had some latch issues the first day, but she has been drinking at the breast because my breasts soften after each feeding.  She keeps falling asleep at the breast and we have been waking every 2-3 hours to eat.

  • Just definitely keep an eye on it.  Lack of pee diapers can be very dangerous for a brand new newborn.... When is your next doctor's appt?  If you still don't see much pee in the next day or so, you should go back for another weighing just to be safe.  While losing weight in the beginning is normal, after that the baby should start gaining around 1 oz per day.
