2nd Trimester

9 pounds!!!!

So I went to the doc for a checkup today and if I understood the nurse correctly I have gained 9 pounds since my last appointment just a month ago. Prior to that I had only gained 3 pounds, so 12 total which I guess isn't that bad but 9 pounds in 4 weeks? What the hell have I done. Now I am nervous I'm going to become a blimp. I know we gain weight during pregnancy and it will happen regardless, I just don't understand the drastic weight gain. Has this happened to anyone else? Also, when does third trimester start? Thanks!!!

Re: 9 pounds!!!!

  • This is EXACTLY what happened to me yesterday at my 16w appt.  I have gained 9 pounds in 4 weeks!! I blame some of it on Thanksgiving and our slower digestive sytem.  Crazy isn't it!

  • I've gained about 12lbs already. According to my little chart, 12 pounds at 22 weeks is smack in the middle of a normal gain, so I wouldn't sweat it.

  • Don't worry! I have a friend who is on track with her weight gain, but said there was one month where she gained way more than the others. I think it just happens like that for some people.

  • That's nothing I've gained 17 lbs at 24 1/2 weeks :D lol I excercise eat healthy, with the occasional naughty, drink tons of water fruits vegetables. I just put on weight. :D my midwife says as long as your doing what your supposed to your body will gain what it needs some more some less!
  • I found out that I gained 9 lbs. at my appointment yesterday too. I have the same fears as you and keep staring at myself in the mirror wondering where the weight is going! My dr. told me if I'm super worried about it, to cut back on carbs and eat mostly veggies and meat - I'm going to try, but I LOVE my carbs! haha.

  • This is what is happening with me.  I didn't gain any weight first tri, and since week 15 or so, I've been gaining close to 2 pounds a week.  It seems completely unrelated to how I'm eating (I eat healthy) or how much I exercise (I (slowly) jog about 3 miles a day most days).  I'm seeing my doctor tomorrow and will ask about it then.  I've gained about 15 pounds total and am at 23 weeks, which doesn't seem absurd to me, but if I keep going at this rate I will be up around 50 by the end of it.
  • That happened to me at my 24 week appointment! 10 pounds in 4 short weeks... the nurse even weighed me twice... I was so embarassed. They baby grows really fast in the 2nd trimester, and even though the baby didnt gain 10 pounds... they need us to eat enough to support them. I woulnt worry about it... I have been told that 3rd trimester starts at 28 weeks.

  • Thanks girls! That makes me feel better. I could definitely be eating better so I am sure that doesn't help. It was just weird since I hadn't changed anything. My belly has definitely gotten bigger though so I guess this little guy is just growing!
  • I had gained 14 1/2 pounds since becoming pregnant, but had a check up today and in three weeks I lost one pound.  (Not sure how I did that over the Thanksgiving holiday.) I wish I had some great advice for you, but I think youll be just fine.  I was a bit freaked out when I had gained 6 pounds in a month.  Good luck to you!
  • that happened to me too. I was told to "expect it" from my doc.

  • Yeah, the biggest weight gain is always from month 5-6. I experienced that with both DS's....and I expect the same thing this time around.

  • I went in yesterday and had gained 5 pounds in 2 weeks! This brings my total to 14 pounds. Neither my nurse or the doctor said anything, so I am going to ignore it :)

  • It happens. I had only gained 11 pounds half way into my 7th month with DS. I gained 45 total. Do the math. There were days at the end when I had gained 5 pounds every two days. Baby was only 6lbs 4oz.(it was all water retention) It wasnt fun and im hoping things are different with this little guy!

Just remember it's all worth it. Wink

  • That is exactly how I gained my weight with ds and it looks like this time around too.  I didn't gain anything until 16wks and then in the early week 20s I gained a ton.  It evened out after that.
  • Water/fluids can play a big role in it, remember.
  • I read that by 27 weeks you should have gained between 16 and 22 lbs, so it sounds like you are right on schedule. I remember gaining alot some months, and hardly any other months. When I had DD I gained 40 lbs and freaked out about it. BUT I lost 30 of it in the hospital- so only had 10 more to go when I got home. Don't worry about the numbers :)

  • this just happened to me today. at my 22 week appointment, i had gained 7 pounds in total. now, four weeks later at 26 weeks, i gained an additional 8 pounds. i couldn't believe it - with the exception of of thanksgiving, i haven't been eating more or doing anything different. my doctor said that my body was probably just playing catch up since i hadn't gained much in the beginning, but she also said she hopes i don't have any more big jumps like that again.?
