Success after IF

XP: Anyone have hidden ovary during u/s?

Hi ladies,

I posted this on the IF board, and am hoping to hear from others who may have had a similar experience.

I posted yesterday about my baseline u/s for IVF not going so well.  My right ovary was completely hidden, and my dr. looked for a good while trying to find it.  He said it could have been hiding behind my bowel.  I've done 6 iui's and had a gazillion u/s before and never had this happen.  I'm terrified that my geriatric ovaries are shriveling up.  I was feeling so good about finally moving to IVF, and was really optimistic about this cycle.  Now, I'm worried that I'll go in next Monday for my first monitoring appt and he still won't be able to find it.

Has anyone ever had an ovary hide during an u/s?  Did it reappear the next time?  Did your dr. say what caused it?  I know I'm probably being paranoid, but it's just never happened to me before.  Thanks for listening

  • Yes, that happened to me. At my first RE appt. he couldn't find one of my ovaries and he asked me if I was sure I even had two to begin with. The funny thing about that was that we were seeing the RE for secondary IF, I had already had one baby. I thought, well, no one ever told me it was missing during my u/s's for the first pregnancy and I had a c/s, so you'd think they might have noticed then. It totally freaked me out. Then, at my next appt. it reappeared. It was surreal. I had no idea that your ovaries could move around and hide!

  • I have had my left ovary hide during the u/s.  Once they said it was behind my bowel and said it was because I hadn't had a bowel movement that day.  Other times they just didn't know where to look.  I got really good at telling them where to find it once I knew where it was.  I am sure your ovary didn't fall off and float away! It will be there the next time you go in.

  • My left ovary apparently often hid.  You had to be really good to find her.  Apparently, she hides behind my uterus.  Would explain why after meds, my left kidney would start to ache as well.

  • While I was doing stims for IVF my right ovary decided to hide... it was growing follies too, so it surprised me that it hid. We did manage to find it, but I had to press down on it to get it into view while she dug around and poked it with the ultrasound. It hurt too, owie.

  • I always had different doctors doing the u/s at my first RE and one of them had the hardest time finding one of my ovary, which was weird. It took her hours where everyone else was in and out in a minute.

Thne I switched clinics and they had u/s techs doing them. Well I had gas one day during the u/s and the tech could not find my ovary... She knew I had gas - had my push on various areas, sit up, walk around and BINGO - after a little bit up popped the ovary!

A lot of years and a million tears finally led me to you.
After 7 years trying to concieve, 3 failed IUIs and 2 failed IVFs, my third IVF was a success!

  • This happen to me just this morning.  The nurse couldn't find my left ovary...she said it was hiding behind my bowels.  She brought someone else in and she found it.  I think it's just experience and they seem to move around during your cycle.
