Do you spend the same amount on everyone?

As far as gifts go?  We got my SIL a waffle maker she has been asking for and my brother a best buy gift card (he refused anything else, lol).  The waffle maker came with a rebate and came down to $10 but my brother's gift card will be $30.  I feel like I need to make up that extra money!

Re: Do you spend the same amount on everyone?

  • Yes, but if it's a giftcard no.  We have a strict budget this year and I'm doing a pretty kicka$$ job of finding deals if you ask me for the things people want, I of course would never tell them the amount I spent.  A giftcard... you can't get a deal on.

  • I usually just try and make sure that its a nice gift that look equal to everyone elses. "If I get a good deal on something it defeats the purspose if I have to go spend the extra $30.00.

That's true.  We got an awesome BF deal on the waffle maker, it was originally $40!  My brother is a pain and refuses anything else, haha.  I have tried to buy him things before and it never seems to work out so I am giving in.

  • Just depends.  My step father wanted golf sock.  They were 3 pair for $11.99 at Dicks sporting goods.  I had a $10 coupon so they were only $1.99.  I was so excited, but then felt like I needed to get him something else.  I ended up getting him two Dallas Cowboys t-shirts for $19.99 and then I had a 20% off coupon.  He will love the t-shirts even though he didn't ask for them.
  • we tend to but its more so I dont overspend. I like buying gifts and can easily get caught up in it. We really try our best to stay under 20 a person but this year we spent 35 on one of DH's sisters and I don't know if I will get his other sis something to compensate or not.
  • No it's dif for every person. I do it based on what they like. We only do gifts for our parents and DS tho. Brothers and sisters have all agreed to no longer exchange.

  • In this case, no I wouldn't stress about it. I tend to go more by what the gift usually costs than on how much I actually paid for it.

For instance if the waffle maker is typically $25-30, I would call it even. Nobody is going to know that you got a great deal on it and only actually spent $10.

  • You can lookat it this way...how much was the waffle maker regularly? if they are the same price then does it matter that you got a rebate for it? They don't need to know that.

WE used to spend $75 onthe kids and we decided 2 yrs ago to only do presents for the kids. Now we have dummed it down to $50. My IL's still spend the $75 and MH and I still spend $75 on DS for both holidays, but I know as the years go on we may end up spending a little less or I will start looking even harder for better deals.

  • I am always afraid of not spending enough too.  I try to remember not to put too much stress into it.  I just think about the great bargain I got and the money I saved on what I bought.  Then, you can use what you saved to buy other presents!!
  • No way.  I spend way more on some than others.  Partially it is because we spend more on the people who do so much for us throughout the year and we get them a nicer holiday present.  Also - we used to spend the same amount on some people with really really nice presents and they barely do anything for us.  We're not going tit for tat but it gets old after a while.

  • I kind of have a price in mind, but I usually find good deals. As long as the gift is well thought out and something I think the person would enjoy, I don't worry if it was less expensive than someone else's gift.
  • No but I try to keep the value of the gift the same...i.e., I got my SIL a great Polo sweater on sale for $30, but it's worth about $50-70.  I'll be giving my nephew a gift card for $50, and I call it equal.

  • If the gifts are comparable, I'd say you're good.

We try to hit a ball park number, but different "groups" have different numbers, ie, little cousins are 15, parents are 40, brothers are 30, etc.
