Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

XP from 6-12: No fruits or veggies, HELP!

DD will not eat any fruits or veggies; no purees, finger foods, anything.  I don't think she likes the wet texture.  She picks it up, touches it to her lips, and throws it on the floor.  If it's on a spoon, she knocks it out of my hand and all over the place.  She won't even give the food a chance.  She eats cheese, yogurt, puffs, and a waffle, and that's it.  She also refuses to try a cup.  She knocks that to the floor, too.

I'm so frustrated about it that I hate feeding time.  Would you call the pedi?  She has a regular check up 12/23, but I know she should be weaning soon, and I don't know how I can do that with her eating habits the way they are.  What would you do?

  • Crush up some Cheerios or crackers and coat the pieces of fruit and veggies in that. It should help - L had an issue with wet texture at first as well.

You could also try the Nuby Sport Sipper. It looks much more like a bottle and is an easier transition. It also has a soft spout, so it more resembles a bottle nipple or breast in texture.

I bought mine at Target. Here is what they look like.

  • Loading the player...
  • I also found that crushed graham crackers were a good coating since they add a sweet taste.  Not something I kept up, but it was a way at first to get her to try things.

I don't know if this will help, but my DD wouldn't eat veggies at home, but did at daycare.  Turns out they boil them in chicken broth.  I bought the Kitchen Basics no-salt-added chicken stock & boil cut up/peeled carrots (often add garlic powder or garlic salt) and she'll eat them right up.  Maybe if your baby got a little good taste in her mouth she'd give it a try....?

  • Try steaming the veggies and topping with shredded cheese or butter.  Something that she likes which will entice her to give it a try.
  • I'm going against the other posts and telling you to not worry about it. Most likely, it is the texture. Just keep trying to offer it and one day she'll start eating them, i promise. Until them, she should still be drinking formula and when you introduce milk she'll be OK. You could ask your pedi about a vitamin supplement or call them but I have a feeling they'll just suggest what you're already doing.

About the cup... I think you give it to her with a little water in it and let her play around get a feel for it. But there is way, way too much pressure to get a baby off a bottle by age 1. I think it is unrealistic. We tried and tried and I was SO frustrated and then viola! at age 16 months we went cold turkey and it was a success. I'm so glad we waited.
