WWYD: Take DS to pedi or not?

DH has been sick (congestion, green mucus, cough, the works). I got sick on Saturday - started with the same symptoms, but, yesterday, got my OB to call something in for me to nip this in the bud quick!  DS got sick on Sunday - runny nose, fever that morning (but not the rest of the day), congestion, etc.  I called the pedi yesterday and gave DS symptoms.  I didn't get to talk to the pedi, just left a message with the nurse and the nurse got back with me saying that if he's not running a fever, then I don't need to bring him in.

Well, here's my dilemma.  DS surely has the same thing as DH and I - some kind of sinus infection; he just can't blow his nose like us or cough stuff up like we can for me to see if he has the green stuff.  I'm suctioning out his nose periodically, checking his temp, and trying to keep him comfortable.  He's super congested in his head, sneezes a fair amount and is starting a little cough every now and then.  Should I call the pedi back again today and ask to speak to her directly, or just take him in?  Here's a catch, though - my car is in the shop and I won't know until a little later if I can get a rental from them AND my pedi is like 40 minutes away from where I live.

WWYD?

 TIA! :)

ETA:  Yeah...I just suctioned his nose b/c he sneezed a couple of times and I knew he needed to "blow" his nose...I got a good bit out and it was a yellowish tint.  I'm DEFINITELY going to take him.  Now, just gotta figure out the car thing!  :)

  • Definitely take him in.  I hope he feels better soon!  If you have to, take a cab.

  • Aw, poor guy!  I'd definitely try to take him in, especially since you and your DH have already been sick with the same symptoms.  GL, I hope he feels better soon!
  • This thing has been going around.  Generally speaking, most pedi's will treat this as a cold until symptoms are around for two weeks, then it's diagnosed as a sinus infection and give antibiotics.  If symptoms aren't getting better or get worse before two weeks, they may prescribe antibiotics sooner.  Personally, I think that antibiotics are over prescribed (my pedi agrees) and at this point since your LO has only been sick for two days, I would be hesitant to put him on meds so quickly.  Give his body a few more days to fight this cold on his own.

I agree with this. With no fever, it just sounds like he has a nasty cold.

I agree with not over medicating, but DS has only been sick one other time before this. It seems cruel to wait two weeks, while my DS is miserable b/c he can't breathe well, coughs and kind of chokes b/c of drainage, can't clear his nose or throat like we can. We are also traveling on the 17th to Colorado, so I really think it would not be the best to try to fly with him if he's still sick and just then diagnosing him then with an infection. Also, it's not like just he is sick - DH and I are both sick with nasty, miserable symptoms that don't seem fair to make DS suffer through...ykwim?

  • Even if two people have the same virus, one may get a sinue infection or something else that needs antibiotics and the other may not. Just because you need an antibiotic doesn't meant that he does. I honestly wouldn't go for an antibiotic for either of you if you've only been sick since the weekend.

Also, if its a virus, an antibiotic won't make any of the symptoms go away anyway.

  • the yellow snot sounds more like a cold. my ds has the same thing. I started using a vicks humidifier with the vicks inserts and it has helped tremendously at night for his breathing. You should give a couple more days to see how he does. It just sounds like a cold right now.
