NPR: A medical costs vent

DH had to take my step daugter into the ER a few months ago on a weekend cause she fell off her bike and cut her elbow.  Nothing awful, she just needed three stitches.  DH has the kids on his crazy ass high deductible plan (I tried to put them on my Kaiser plan but their mother wouldn't hear it, a whole different vent).

Anyway, we get around to opening the mail from late in the week last night and there is a bill from the hospital.

$1500 IndifferentFor THREE stitches.  That is $500/stitch and more than our mortgage payment.  How in the WORLD does it really cost that much??

  • That happened to me in college.  $1500 for an emergency room visit for sinus infection/strep throat.  Mine happened because I didn't "call the insurance company BEFORE going to the ER" um... huh?  What if I had fallen off my bike and needed stitches and it was a real emergency?  Ridiculous.  Insurance is such a pain in the ass.  I hate all the sneaky ways they get you.
  • I'm in the process of a lawsuit against Yaz birth control pills due to having gallbladder disease and removal last year. I just got all the statements together to submit to my attourney....

    1 ER trip

    1 ER abdominal ultrasound

1 emergence surgery to remove said gallbladder

    3 night stay in recovery.

    $32,000
