Preemies

+ and - vent

Earlier this afternoon I was so frustrated I was almost in tears.

*I'm really getting sick and tired of the apnea monitor, not only are the new lead wires worse than the first ones, but now the monitor goes off 15 beeps WHEN SHE IS BREATHING. Ugh.

*I'm getting fed up with having to worry about LO getting sick every time we want to go somewhere or have people over.

*I'm fed up with everyone (DH, ILs) worrying that LO isn't getting enough to eat (I'm EBF). LO is gaining about an ounce a day and the doc is not concerned, WTH???

So I became a bad mother. I shut the monitor off, unplugged LO, and we played for about an hour on the playmat. We looked in mirrors all around the house and talked to EVERY ceiling fan.

When she fell asleep I hooked her back up and called the monitor company and gave them "whatfor". They are doing a download tomorrow and the pedi should have the results by next week! I don't have to wait for the specialist appt in January! (The pedi thinks the monitors are a waste.)

WOOO HOOOO!

Re: + and - vent

  • Sorry the monitor was such a pain.  Hopefully she doesnt need it any more :+)
  • yes, monitors stink...but I don't think you were the wrong to have some monitor-free time...glad you guys had fun with it.  Hope you are monitor-free soon!

  • You're a good mommy!

Everyone told us over and over again that we were the best monitor out there. As long as we were watching him, he could be off the monitor. Obviously if he's playing, he's breathing. The hour downtime probably did you both good!

  • Oh you think your a bad mother? We took ours off the monitors ourselves about 6 weeks early! First we took them off during the day and only used during naps and nighttime and then, 3 weeks early, we took them off completely! They were SUCH a pain!! And can you imagine everything you are dealing with times two? They hated the wires and the monitors went off non-stop! Sometimes it said "heart fast" and "heart slow" at the same time. We got NO sleep and eventually started sleeping through the alarms! The alarm company was no help. I am so glad those things are gone! Sorry you are having such a hard time with them. I hope the monitor company can figrue it out. We had better luck with the belts, fwiw.

Your DD is SUCH a little cutie!! And I LOLed when you said "talked to every celing fan," That was so cute!!

Our ped said that the babies didn't have to be on the monitors if we were watching them 100%. So if you are feeding and playing then unplug and enjoy!

You know, it makes me really happy to hear I'm not the only one who turns off the monitor. DH would have a heart attack if he knew I did it, but sheesh, if I'm playing with her I think I'd notice if something was awry!

  • Yea, it's safe if you are watching her! In fact my ped encouraged me to take breaks from the monitors for my sanity's sake. I just took too much of a break but I had it by then! Plus neither baby ever had As or Bs in the NICU.
