Pointers on laying down to BF

I'd really like to try this tonight, but don't really know how to position him or myself.  Anyone have any advice?

TIA

  • Sorry for the double post.  I lost internet connection on the first post so I thought I needed to re-post.

  • I don't know if we do it 'right' or not, but I've found that if we both lay down on our sides facing each other (I usually have to lightly hold her body so it stays in position) then BFing works like a charm :)  It's a bit tricky at first getting the right spot that's not too high or too low for her, but you get the hang of it after a while.  All of DD's night feedings are laying down, so we are starting to become much quicker at getting into position ;)
  • We can't because my LO has reflux but the times we have I just lined her up and made sure she was on her side. Its a little tough if you have larger breasts to?align?everything. Like with all holds it takes some practice!
  • When we were first figuring out how to BF in the side-lying position, I would latch her on while sitting up and sort of ease down into a laying down position. She would just adjust her latch slightly. Sometimes I think it's easier if I'm not straight up and down, but rather lying sort of diagonal. I have to keep her snugged right up to me- sometimes I use a sleep positioner to help hold her on her side so she doesn't flop over on her back with my nipple still in her mouth!
  • I typically hold DD in a cross-cradle hold with the hand opposite from the side from which I am feeding. Then I move onto my side to lie down and lie down on the same side from which she is feeding. So for example, if she is feeding off the right side, I am holding her with my left arm and using my right arm to move myself to a laying down position. I move her at the same time so we end up facing each other. Its hard to describe in words but that is how I figured it out. It takes a few times to get it right.
  • Thanks ladies.  He is waking up from his nap so I guess we'll see what happens.

  • Side-lying is a lifesaver :) I just rest in my side with bottom arm under my head and pillow. Line baby up on back so mouth is in line with your nipple. Use top free arm to roll baby toward you and support. The first few times DS needed a little help and it was awkward trying to use my bottom arm to guide him to latch. But he caught on very quickly. Some ladies roll onto their bellies a bit to offer the other breast, but I just move to the other side. GL!

  • When we figured out how to nurse lying down I got soo much better sleep at night and it helped her not to choke on my over supply issues.  I agree with pp, lay tummy to tummy and put your arm your lying on under a pillow.

  • DS refused to nurse side-lying in any position other than flat on his back. He'd fuss and refuse to latch if I tried to position him tummy-to-tummy. He lays on his back and sort of looks over his shoulder, and I just position myself accordingly.

He also will only nurse to the left, so I can't change sides. We love it though, and now that he's bigger, he'll sort of reach over with his right hand and grab my boob while he's feeding.

Ditto this, although our LO didn't really get the hang of it or take the nipple correctly laying down until about 4 months old, by which point I didn't have to hang on to him or anything, he just rolls to find the nipple and latches great.

  • Tummy-to-tummy, and lining up his nose with my nipple when latching on, always worked for us. When DS was really small, I would use a rolled-up baby blanket behind him to keep him on his side, so I didn't have to hold him. Side-lying was (and still is) a life-saver for us! Keep trying, I think it also helps if you already know what a good latch feels like - my DH would help us with it in the v v beginning also, since it is hard to see what the baby's doing while lying down.

  • We use the breast closest to the bed.  I move her next to me a little below my nipple because she tends to arch her head back a little (ouch).  I've found this position is the one she is the most relaxed in during nursing.  it's awesome to not have to get up either.  H usually brings her in in the morning while I'm catching up on sleep.
  • another thing i did was put a pillow behind me to support my back - there were some nights where i nursed all night and sleeping on my side without any support was a killer!!
