Baby Names

BIL/SIL want exactly the same names!

Funny thing happened over the holiday weekend. We found out that DH's wonderful brother and his wife are going to start TTC in a few months. YAY! I asked about names and such and found out that they want the exact same boys name that we do, and our girl names are pretty freakin close! Being as how we won't TTC for another year or so, we were pretty bummed to lose the name(s). Super exited about new baby to be though!

So we've been brainstorming new baby names. Last name is Irish, so we are trying to stick close to that. What do you think of

Liam, Gareth, Lance or Gage?

Re: BIL/SIL want exactly the same names!

  • Liam - great, but pretty popular.

Gareth - I don't like the "th" on the end, but I do like Garrett.

    Lance - Love it.

Gage - I can't decide. I love Gabe, but I'm not sure about Gage.

  • Liam is our boy name! The others are NMS.

  • WELL before you start brainstorming new names. They are likely only going to have ONE child, either a boy or a girl. SO not going to use both names. SO you can use the other one if you have a kid of the other gender.

ALSO just because they are TTC before you doesn't mean that they'll neccessarily have a baby before you. I wish them well and all... but nothing's a guarantee. Whoever has the kid first gets the name.

  • Liam is sooooo trendy. I can't tell you how many people I know who are naming their sons or have son's with this name. My dad is Lance and he's never cared for his name. On the phone people have no idea what he's saying when he says his name. He always has to spell it. Gage is way too out there for me. I love Garrett, but not Gareth.
  • I wouldnt worry cause they will propbally change their minds(a couple times) but if I would choose a name from your list I would go with Gareth.

  • I wouldn't worry about it too much. When my SIL and BIL told us they were expecting, they had picked out a few boy & girl names that we also really, really liked. By the time they had the baby, they went a totally different direction and those 2 names we liked aren't even on our shortlist any more. Things can definitely change!

Of our names I like Liam best. The rest are NMS.

  • Why do people talk about names before they are even pregnant? Anyway...

Agree with PP that you could end up pregnant first, for all anyone knows. If you had both picked out the same names, I agree whomever has the baby first gets to use it.

Of your list, I definitely like Gareth the best.

My friends and I have been talking about baby names since we were 16. I don't think it's uncommon at all. My brother and SIL have their boy name decided and they aren't TTC for a few years! I think talking about baby names is just fun.

  • As a few others have said, I wouldn't worry about it.  They and you are likely to change your mind.  I had convinced dh into naming our first daughter Ava.  10 months of ttc and thinking about it more seriously made me change my mind.  We ended up choosing Taylor around the end of my 1st trimester.  It stuck through the pregnancy and I never looked back...at Ava that is:-)

  • my SIL took our boy name of Graham. We were so bummed so then I was hoping they would habe a girl first to give us a chance to use it..but nope it's a boy. So she is having Graham. So that means we won't have boys, or there is a better boy name out there for us.

  • My sister actually did this too.... I had a favorite girl name and boy name from the time I was like 12 and when my sister had her 2nd girl, she used my girl name!!!!  I wasn't married at the time, so whatever, I gave it up and let it go, and now I am married and both my sister and I are pregnant, and due within a week of each other.  I was super scared that my sister would take my boy name (which my husband loved as well, so that is our #1 boy option) so I told her what it was and she said that the name had been on the table for a boy for them!!!!  So now she has taken it off the table because she already knows that she has used my favorite girl name and her husband wasn't totally sold on the name anyway.

Out of your options, I really only like Liam just because the other ones remind me of books or movies I have read or seen.....

  • I wouldn't bank on them using either name.  So many people change their minds a million times before the baby arrives.  My SIL/BIL had chosen Kera Denise for their baby girl's name.  They were certain. My SIL was 8 mos. pregnant at my wedding and my BIL signed all their names in the wedding album including Kera Denise.  Then the baby arrives and all of a sudden her name was Phaedra Alanis.  What the???

Ya never know what can happen.
