Success after IF

If you work full time, how many hours a week?

I am reminded time and time again that my job really can't be done in 40 hours a week.  Well, actually, my job can't really be done in 70 hours a week, but I made my peace with that years ago....now it seems that even the bare minimum cannot be done in less than 40 hours.  It is affecting my self esteem when I leave at 5 and have stuff left on my plate.  I definitely do about an hour of work at home almost every night and there are definitely weeks that I am at the office for closer to 45 hours but I don't like that since then I miss out on seeing G.  And honestly, I still have work left to do.  Pre-baby I definitely worked closer to 50 hours a week but now I do not and really cannot do that.  I am in senior management so I know some extra time should be expected but I also work for a non-profit so I am certainly not compensated for extra time.

I guess I'm just curious as I don't think I'll do anything about it but are there full time jobs out there that are really just 40 hours a week?

  • Yup.  I work 36 hours a week (it's 3, 12 hour shifts).  I get full time benefits.  It's nice.

  • Mine is 40 hours most of the time.  I do go in on an occasional weekend to catch up, and sometimes field emails from my blackberry at night, but I don't let it get too out of control.

When I go back after having the babies, I am going to have to be even more on top of my hours since the girls can only be in daycare for 9 hours/day max.

  • I am pretty much 45 hours a week, maybe a bit more on busy weeks.  I work in schools (school psych), so the school day is 7 hours, plus staying a little late a few days a week.  I probably average about an hour of work at home a night.  To be honest, part of the reason I chose school psych (instead of private practice clinical or counseling psych) was for the hours and the summers off.

  • I work in health care- I am salary(40 hrs/week) and I get paid the same amount whether I work a full day or not (which is nice!).  I tend to get my work done and I am able to leave about 15 minutes-30 minutes early on most days.  However I am also required to stay later if necessary (but this is rare)

  • LOL. I cant do my job in 40 hours a week. I work closer to 50 hrs/wk and certainly am concerned about how to adjust this and not suck at my job once lil one is here.  I dont work for a nonprofit but there is no additional compensation for extra hours worked. A lot of times I feel like I am working extra just to keep my head above water. I think we just have to accept that there is no way the desk is going to be cleaned off or the To Do list completed at the end of every day.
  • I work about 37 hours per week
  • When I was working before, definitely closer to 50 hours a week, sometimes 60+. I'm on a reduced schedule when I go back (tomorrow!) which I'm hoping will help me keep it to 40 hours a week, but I'm skeptical. If I have too many times where I'm stuck in the office past 7 or so, I'm going to have to rethink the job because I can't handle missing all my time with Toodle.

  • I try to keep it 40-45 hrs/wk since I'm salaried. I don't take work home if I can help it, but I do work 1 weekend day a month to catch up while no one is there to interrupt. If possible, I try to comp my time somewhere when the patient load allows. (I'm a rehab manager)
  • I work about 45-50 hours a week. It's salaried and there is no overtime. I also travel about once a month, often on weekend days and there is no comp for that either. I know that feeling of never being able to catch up and it is so stressful. I really think I have to find a less demanding job after the baby comes.

  • My hours vary depending on the time of the month. The first week and last week of the month I am very busy. I put in a lot of extra hours those two weeks. I try and just work 9-5 at work and do the rest when the boys are in bed so I can see them, but sometimes I am at the office late and a lot of times I am there very early. But then the two weeks in the middle of the month I am pretty slow and can get away with coming in later or leaving early. I look at it like a trade off.
  • I'm not working now, but when I was, my job was a straight 40 hours.  I guess that was one perk of being hourly and having to "punch a clock".

  • I wish :)  I'm at least 50 hours a week plus at least 1 or 2 Saturdays a month.  And, sadly, this is a *huge* improvement from my last job!
