I think it depends on the airport...when I traveled they had us take jackets and things off so they probably wouldn't have allowed me to keep the carrier on...I just held her through security so I wouldn't have to bother with taking the carrier on and off.

Yes, you are allowed to. I do it all the time and just wore mine in the mei tai a few days ago. The only problem you would run into would be if you have a carrier with metal in in, like a ring sling. Even then it's no big deal, just ask TSA to "wand" you.
I wore DS through security at BWI with no problems (in a mei tai).

When Malone was 2 months we traveled via airplane. I wore him in my Babyhawk and didn't have to take him off in either airport (Hartford and O'Hare). They patted him down, but gave me no trouble otherwise.
I wasn't asked to remove him (he was wrapped) - I even asked once if I had to.
Out of four flights, I was told once by a flight attendant that I couldn't wear him during take off and landing (that is an FAA reg I think) - she never came back to check though and I wasn't asked to on other flights (either they didn't want to wake a sleeping baby or they thought my wrap was a blanket).
I always have DD in a MT, and I've never been asked to remove her. I'm very careful that I have no metal on me to set off the detector though, and they've never wanded me either.
I forgot to take off DD's shoes once though, and the TSA agent nearly had a fit. It was hilarious.

all depends...
the one time we flew with the moby, they let me through
the three times with the ring sling, we had to take it off (probably due to the fact they could see the metal rings)
this last time, with the pouch sling, no problem
