Babies: 3 - 6 Months

somewhat vent over LO being a "small" baby

LO was 6 lb 7 oz at birth. by day 2, he had dropped to 5 lb 15 oz (which was 5th%). i EBF, so from the beginning, i have equated his growth with how good of a job i'm doing at BFing, which was really stressful at first (especially when he had gas problems and would just scream at the breast and skip feedings). at 1 mo, he was 8 lb 4 oz (10th%), and at 2 months he was 10 lb 1 oz (still 10th%). now, my LO does not look skinny to me. heck, he even has fat rolls on his arms, legs and he has quite a big tummy (IMO). we don't have a scale, so i used my parents' this past weekend while we were there for thanksgiving (with me weighing myself and then adding him and subtracting the difference), and he only weighs 12.4 lbs. i was really disappointed and sad. any one else with LOs on the smaller side know how i feel? i know he is getting plenty to eat b/c his diapers have been soaked in pee lately (to the point of leaking everywhere) and he poops a lot and is happy, but still, i just wish he would at least be in the 50th%!

Re: somewhat vent over LO being a "small" baby

  • He looks like chunky monkey to me! DS was 5 lbs 15 oz at birth. He is currently 17 lbs 10 oz. He had a couple of huge growth spurts where he packed on the pounds around 3 months and 5 months. I know how you feel, having a "small" baby really stressed me out and I was freaked out about his weight gain in the beginning, which is the main reason why I started EPing- so I could know EXACTLY how much he was eating. I don't suggest this, it is a huge PITA. Sounds like you are doing fine! He is happy, healthy, gaining weight and having enough wet/poopy diapers. Keep it up!

  • DS was 11 lbs 1 oz at his 2 month appt and 13 lbs 8 oz at his 4 month appt. he's just not a very big baby. i dont mind it at all. we definitely get our money out of his clothes. he wore NB for 3 months and he's been in 3 months now for the last 3 months. he is just starting to wear a few 6 month things but he's manely still in 3-6 months. my sister's son wore his NB clothes for 2 weeks and had outgrown them. she had TONS of stuff he never even wore. as long as theyre growing and the pedi isnt concerned, i wouldnt worry about it.

  • DD is technically in the 50th%, but is considered "skinny" by so many people who come up to me in public. She's just small, not itty bitty! They ask me how old she is and then they flip out saying "she's soooo LITTLE!!"

    Argh.

I personally am not worried about it, since I was smaller than her. At 6 months I weighed only 12 lbs - after a birth weigh of 7 lbs. I didn't really grow until I was 8 months!

Also, keep this in mind: babies should double their birthweight at around 5 months and triple around one year in age.

  • There's nothing wrong with a small baby.  As you said, he has plenty of wet and dirty diapers.  Does he seem satisfied?  It sounds like he's getting plenty to eat and is just small.  I worry because DD is big!  As long as he stays consistent he's fine.  Someone needs to make up the bottom of the weight chart just like someone makes up the top!

aw, thanks! I know some people don't like hearing that their baby looks fat/big/chunky, but I love it! :) I guess I was most upset b/c he just had a huge growth spurt - or so I thought b/c he was eating nonstop - so I thought he would be at least 13 lbs by now. I really hope he at least doubles his birth weight by his 4 month appointment! i would EP, but i am lazy and like the convenience of BFing :)

yeah, he seems satisfied. he takes himself off the breast when he's full and smiles at me. he doesn't go an incredibly long time between feedings though (he rarely makes it 3 hours between feedings; 2.5 hours is more regular, and sometimes just 2 hours). i'm wondering if he's snack eating, but i'm not sure how to break him of that habit if that's what he's doing.

  • I don't think your LO is that small at all.  My DS weight 13lb at his 3 month appt and can still fit into 0-3 clothes at over 5 months old.  We just moved him into the 3-6 this past week because his shirts were getting a bit short from multiple washings.  As long as your LO is growing, peeing & pooping, there's nothing to worry about.  Every baby is different!
  • My LO is 4 months and only 13.6 lbs and I EBF. He has acid reflux and gas issues too and it involved me changing my diet. My pedi said he was in the 25th percentile, but that was good! I know people are use to seeing chubby babies, my MIL said DH was built the same way,
  • DS was 7lb 10oz at birth, and was 13lb at his 3 month appt.  We go for his four month next week, so we'll see where he's at, but it looks like 14lb or so based on the same thing you did with the scale.  He's always sat just at or  below the 50th percentile.  I think he's perfect!

As long as they're peeing/pooping and seem satisfied, I wouldn't worry.  DH would laugh at me saying that, considering I was always sure I wasn't feeding DS enough in the beginning!

    ETA: I also EBF.

  • no worries, truett has almost the same measurements. he weighed the same at birth and during his 2 month check up he was 10lbs 4oz. doc said he hopes for truett to weigh around 14lbs during his 4 month check up.

like my doc told us...every baby is different & for HIM, he is growing great. he is eating plenty & progressing along just right.

  • He looks adorable to me!  K is tiny too--only in the 3rd % for her age.  But the pedi is happy with her eating and growth.  She's just going to be small, which is a little strange for me because i'm 5'11"!

aw thank you! thanks for your reassurance, ladies! :) it helps to get encouragement from fellow moms!

  • My DS was born at 6 lb, 14oz. He is now 12 lb, 14oz. He's been gaining slowly but steadily. I am also sometimes confused by his smaller size since I have a ton of milk. I had an oversupply and even now just have a lot of milk. But, we have a smaller baby. It's ok. I'm sure our little guys will catch up eventually!

  • my LO was 10lbs 4oz at his 2 month and is now 12 lbs 2oz. He gained 9 oz this past week, because we were away for Thanksgiving and I used more formula than normal (I usually give him about 3 oz a day).  He was actually a large baby when he was born (8lb 12oz) and lost over a pound in the hospital.  Yes, I would like him to weigh more, but the pediatrician isn't concerned and my DS is perfectly healthy, happy and satisfied, and gaining (just slowly) so I am trying not to worry about it. Breastfed babies are often lower on the charts.

  • I'm having the same issue but pedi doesn't seem concerned. B will be 6 months on Friday and is only 13.5. She was 7.7 at birth. She is healthy and eats very well.?

This makes me feel a bit better!  LO will be 4 months next week and is just now over 11 pounds.  She has tons of dirty and wet diapers and never seems to be starving.  We supplement with formula a bottle or two a day, but she seems to be doing just fine BF.  She was small when she was born (7lbs4oz at a week and a half past due) so I don't see how she can be expected to be giant!  I hope that the pedi continues to see it this way.

  • my baby was running about the same size as yours up until our 4 mo. appt.

    birth = 6 lb, 6 oz

    4 days old = 6 lbs even

    2 mo = 10 lb, 12 oz (30th percentile)

    4 mo = 14 lb, 10 oz (75th)

also EBF.   Don't know what happened in the last 2 months, but she sure chunked up.    Although her length was still between 25th and 50th percentile at 24 inches even

  • I was just having this discussion with my friend today, her son is 8 months and in the 3% for weight and 10% for height but he is perfectly healthy and happy. Some babies are just smaller and some are bigger. Its a range and some babies have to be on the low range. But your son is so adorable and looks healthy and happy. So dont stress.
  • My little guy was 6 lb 7 oz when he was born and dropped to 6lbs when we left the hospital. I also EBF and when I weighed him at 3 months, he was 13 lb 4 oz, so a little bit bigger than your guy, but not by much. Your kiddo looks perfect and healthy to me! As long as he's gaining weight and seems happy, I wouldn't be worried :)
  • Your LO looks fine to me in your siggy pic.  As long as he's happy and getting fed, I am sure everything is fine. If the pedi thought his weight was unhealthy, he would let you know.  I am sure you are doing everything right.  don't get down on yourself.  Remember, the % are averages, some fall below and some above.
