Trying to Get Pregnant

How can I sleep better? (GP related, longish)

I wake up 3 or 4 times in a typical night (usually have to pee when I get up), and while this has always been annoying, now it's going to interfere with my plans to chart next year when we start TTC. So, any ideas on getting more solid sleep? So far I've tried:

  • Cutting out caffeine (I only drink 1 diet coke a day, so it's not a lot to cut)
  • Not drinking anything after 8 p.m.
  • Keeping the cats out of the bedroom
  • Turning off the TV at night (DH fights me on this though, so we haven't done it for many nights in a row)

None of this has helped though.

If I could get down to waking up twice a night I'd be happy at this point...I'd be getting better sleep and charting would be possible 'cause I'd get 3 hours straight most nights.

Re: How can I sleep better? (GP related, longish)

  • How about taking some sleeping medicine?

  • Maybe some warm milk later in the evening... or they have this nighttime tea (I can't remember the brand name) that is supposed to calm you.

Also, get the calming lavender baby wash and take a nice warm bath with it.

    Hope that helps.

  • Is there a tv in your bedroom? I read somewhere once that to get the best sleep, you have to train your body to see the bedroom as a place for two things. Sleep, and sex. This means no tv, no computer, no reading, no eating. I started following this when I was 19, and never looked back.

Oh, and I forgot I've tried melatonin too, which DH swears by but which does nothing for me. I don't think you're supposed to take OTC sleep stuff long term...my doctor has offered me a prescription for an antidepressant that is used off-label for sleep issues, but I'm not that desparate...yet

  • I don't know if this will help or not, but caffeine can stay in your system for 5 hours afterwards, so try and make sure to drink caffeinated soda or coffee no later than 5 hours before you want to go to sleep.  I hope that helps :)

I also take a Tylenol (regular, not PM) sometimes if I think I might have trouble sleeping.  It just eliminates any random aches and pains that might be keeping me from sleeping or sleeping deeply.

I also read this long ago and believe it works well.  Good luck!

Yes, we have a TV in the bedroom...I've tried to keep it off to see if that helps, but DH is quite dependent on it as background noise; he has trouble sleeping in total quiet (or so he says).

Sleepytime Tea by Celestial Seasonings or Lipton's Quietly Chamomile.

Are there any lights in your room?  Little lights on things, even alarm clocks can disturb me at night.  I have to cover up the carbon monoxide detector in my room (it blinks) and some clipper thing my husband always keeps on a charger that has a little green light.

Buy him a sound machine.  Maybe some type of white noise would benefit him and not disturb you.  Or soft music?

  • I would give it a trial run, just to see if it helps. Tell DH that it's really concerning you, and you can also throw in that there have been many studies done proving that sleeping with a tv on affects the quality of your sleep. True story.
  • Maybe try a fan or white noise machine for your DH instead of the TV?
  • Lots of good ideas, thanks ladies! I may have to try the teas, it's certainly worth a shot! DH may be open to the white noise machine too, I hadn't thought of that before.

I haven't been working out at all lately (shame on me), but I've had this issue consistently whether I was hitting the gym hard or not, so I don't think there's a correlation. I am going to get back into the yoga routine though, which helps with relaxation if nothing else.

  • I'm glad you asked. I struggle with the same thing. I try to stop drinking liquids a little earlier. We have no tv in our room. The main thing that keeps me up is having to go to the bathroom and our dogs. Some good ideas shared here.

  • A vitamin D supplement helps me sleep more deeply although I have not read anything that indicates that this is a typical effect.
