Hello. I am currently 5 weeks pregnant with my 2nd child. I can't remember the rules about whether it is safe to continue working out my abs in the 1st trimester. Does anyone know?
A personal trainer friend of mine said that it is fine in the first trimester. She said it can actually be a good thing to strengthen all of your core muscles. I think once the uterus begins to push the abdominal muscles outwards, you should stop.
I have been told that it is safe until your belly gets in the way. If you keep your abs in somewhat decent shape you will have a much faster/easier recovery. Plus a stronger core and overall being in better shape will make labor that much more easier for you.
I'm a trainer. If you have been working out before pregnancy abs are safe to do until your stomach gets in the way ot you feel uncomfortable. And like someone above said- its actually good because you will strengthen your core muscles which will aid in delivery. If you have not been working out before pregnancy keep it light and easy- don't be doing 500 crunches!

Like pp's said, it's absolutely safe during pregnancy to workout your abs!!! It is outdated advice/myth that you can't. It will help so much during your pregnancy by helping to strengthen your core to carry that load that you'll soon have. Plus, it is invaluable during L&D to have a strong core. This is my third pregnancy and during the other two I did regular pilates (complete with on the back exercises and everything - just not on tummy) until around 28 weeks, which is when I began to modify. Just make sure to listen to your body and take frequent breaks when you need to!
