should I be annoyed with dr's office?

For the past week I have been dealing with severe nausea. It's at the point where I can barely keep my head off of the pillow, which makes getting through the work day quite interesting.

I called my doctor at 1:30pm. Explained that I am a new patient and I totally understand them not wanting to prescribe me any drugs before they even see me. So the receptionist was sort of snooty and transfered me to the nurse's voicemail. I very nicely explained my situation and she never called me back! Now I am second guessing whether I picked the right practice. New patient or not shouldn't I at least be extended a call back the same day?

I don't know if I am just being hormonal or what. Probably a little bit of both :)

Re: should I be annoyed with dr's office?

  • I'm not saying you should def. switch, BUT... if there are other options in your area you may want to investigate further.  Dr.'s offices not returning calls when patients are nervous or uncomfortable pisses me off...  it's not like you need the actual doc to call... a nurse would do just fine.  It would annoy me and I think it is a small red flag and I would see if they call back first thing in the morning or not.

  • I think they should have called you back today, especially since your nausea is so severe.  Try again in the morning and explain you never heard anything back.

FWIW, my OB/GYN's office is very good about calling back.  It's their job to be attentive to patients.

If you're not satisfied, definitely find a new practice.  You need to feel comfortable with the doctor and the staff you will be seeing for awhile.  Good luck.

  • Ugh, that's annoying. I've had that happen before too. My advice is to call back in the morning and tell them you called yesterday but never heard back. Be nice at first but if you don't talk to someone, I'd get snooty right back!

  • I would definitely be annoyed, pregnant or not! I would look elsewhere for a doctor, but that's just me. I'm sorry that happened to you. :/

  • They should have called you back new patient or not. If they are too busy to call you back then who's to say next time you need them they wont do the same thing?  I would look into other options if I were you.
  • They should have called you back today- new patient or not.  Make sure you call them first thing in the morning and every hour after if you have to!  Sorry you have to deal with that;-(

  • Messages are returned by order of priority.  So it just may be that by the time you called they had many other messages of ladies who were higher priority.  I would think you'd get a call tomorrow.
  • I mean....are they going to treat you better once they've seen you once? Is that the stipulation? I would do some research and see if you can get some answers from some other dr. offices because I would be concerned if that's how they are always going to treat you--like you're inconveniencing them or bothering them. You should feel comfortable calling and asking questions when you have concerns!
