do feel a little guilty

that I ate a Subway sandwich with cold cuts it and I did NOT toast it or heat it up at all. This whole "don't eat lunch mean because of Listeria" thing really has me confused. I know TONS of women who lived on cold cuts when they were pregnant. Why is it such an issue all of the sudden? I think I plan to still enjoy a sandwich once in a while. Moderation, right?

Re: do feel a little guilty

  • yeah, and as long as it is fresh lunch meat you are fine.

  • I think it is really just your option. I am going to ask my doctor about it Thursday and will let everyone know what he says. I love cold cuts and do not like them warm or heated so I know how you feel.
  • I hate this whole "listeria" thing! I love some bologna or turkey sandwiches for lunch. I'm all freaked out now and don't want to risk it. But I'm craving a bologna and mayo sandwich for lunch. I will be asking my doc next week Thursday too. Hopefully he says moderation is fine b/c I don't think I can go 9 months w/o!
  • Yes - everything in moderation. Just be picky about where you eat. I was craving a roast beef and swiss sandwich at a local deli when I was 7 wks along and I ate it :) And it was soooo good. Didn't get sick either. But my friend who lives in NY, didn't touch the stuff her whole pregnancy b/c her Dr. was dead set against it. I guess it all depends on how rigid you are going to be and what your Dr. recommends. I plan on eating fish and peanuts also. Lol.
  • I ate one last week and it was DELICIOUS.  I want another now :):):)

My theory is, I'm not eating them every day, and I'm not buying them from a sketch street vendor on a 90 degree day.  I wanted one, and did NOT like the thought of it being warmed.. and I don't regret it at alllll :)

  • I feel like it's totally okay in moderation, as long as you're not eating cold cuts every day you should be fine.  All this talk about sandwiches has made me really want a gyro.  I think I'm going to have to have an early dinner and get one!
  • I know, I hate having to heat all my deli meat!  I used to always have pepperoni and bread for a snack in the middle of the day and now I can't.  I might have a little here and there in moderation though.

  • I've made a decision to not heat up my lunch meat.

    There.  I said it.

  • I'm a microbiologist and used to work in a food lab.  We would test food for Listeria (amoung other things) and would hardly ever find it.  When we would find it, it would usually be in things like fresh mushrooms, sprouts, and occasionally hot dogs from a very small, local processor.  Basically it was much more common to find it in fresh produce than processed meats but even saying that it was VERY rare to ever find it.  Of course it's a personal decision of what you're comfortable with.
  • I say enjoy it from a clean place where you know there is high turnover. I was avoiding feta and stuff and now I reliaze- it's totally pasturized!  Plus, this was unheard of 5-10 years ago.. there are just too many rules now.
