DH researched 529 plan options extensively, and we ended up with Alaska's T. Rowe Price fund after comparing the returns of the plans from different states. And no, your child won't have to go to school in Alaska I would look through some of the finance mags and compare both annual returns as well as long-term returns. We opened our DD's fund before she was born, in DH's name, and then transferred it to her name once she arrived. It was a very easy process. The grandparents (or anyone else) can also contribute whenever they like by filling out a form from the web site and sending in payment. Definitely a nice Christmas gift!! GL in your search

We started a 529 in Illinois directly through Bright Start. You can enroll online through their website. We opened in my name and will switch beneficiaries once DS has a social security number.
