Trying to Get Pregnant

Did you....

Consult a doctor before TTC? Did anyone get a doctor involved prior to 1 year of TTC?

 Thanks!

Re: Did you....

  • nope. When I was in for my annual I just mentioned that we were going to start TTC so I'd be stopping the BCP and he gave me a prescription for a PNV, that was it though.

  • I just told my doc at my routine pap. She had me get a tetanus vaccination (OUCH), told me to have DH come in for a blood test (I have a congenital microcytic anemia), and told me to have fun. Not much. She didn't even say anything about PNV's.
  • I scheduled a pre-conception check up and then had my annual physical and asked a few questions about it.  He ran some bloodwork to see if I needed any vaccinations and such.  Turns out I was low in B12.
  • Some people go to pre-conception appointments, but for the most part I think they're fairly useless. As long as you're current on your annual exam and taking your PNV's, you should be a-okay to start.

Seeing a dr before 1 year is only really necessary when there is an issue (like having PCOS, ridiculously long cycles, etc) or if you're over 35 at which point I think they say to see a dr after 6 months.

It can take a healthy, normal couple a year to conceive. Each cycle that you have well timed intercourse, you still only have a 20% chance of getting KU.

  • nope.  I just recently made sure my midwife was still around the same office, which she wasn't...so had to find her...otherwise...nope!

  • Mine just said start taking PNVs and that it can take a year to conceive.  This was all prior to being dx with Hashimoto's and PCOS.

  • I mentioned it at my annual and my doc recommended a chlamydia test in addition to my pap.  I would also make sure any prescription meds are safe for TTC.

  • I did...but only because I went off the pill and didn't have a period before my next gyn appointment, which was about 4 months later.   With the PCOS diagnosis, it's not necessary to try for a year - since I am annovulatory, it's not like waiting 12 months means anything.

    This exactly.

  • We did a pre-conception appointment a year out, and I started taking PNVs at that point as well.

We spent over $800, I might add, on bloodwork to rule out any obvious problems (crappy insurance at that time, much better now). I am, you might imagine, somewhat bitter on this point right now.

  • I have my annual on Wednesday and I will mention that we started trying recently, just to say if she has anything to recommend or comment on.  I do not think an appointment solely for pre-conception is necessary.

  • I'll probably consult a doctor if we hit a year of TTC and no results.   I'm almost too scared to see if there is a problem to go any sooner.
  • I told my doctor before we started TTC, and he sent me in for bloodwork just to check everything was ok...
