Infection after 3rd/4th degree tear?

I went to the doctor today and have a severe infection after my 4th degree tear.  I said to my doctor "it will be all fixed up eventually right?" and her response was "I don't know honey."

I'm so upset.  I have been so positive this whole pregnancy, even after the PUPPPs, high blood pressure, extreme swelling (70lbs!), 4 hours of pushing, episiotomy, 4th degree tear, and now a serious infection.  Every step of the way I have said "she is worth it, this is nothing, I can do it."  But now I'm just in tears.  Am I going to have to have surgery that has a low success rate?  Has anyone had an infection and NOT had to get surgery?  I feel so lost and unable to take care of my baby.  My DH has been doing everything and I can't even be left alone with her.  The recovery for the surgery is a week in the hospital and 1 month bedrest.  This is not how I planned to spend my maternity leave.

Has anyone else had the surgery or been able to avoid it with antibiotics?

Re: Infection after 3rd/4th degree tear?

  • I had alot of problems with my episioty & tear aswell. At first my hemmroids were so bad I couldn't even notice the pain with my tear. Once they went down I started feeling all the pain. I had to go on atibiotics & the doctor had to do some "work" down there (some cutting & restiching) but I didn't need surgery. At the time I didn't think I would ever be ok down there again but eventually it did get better.

Did they give you a sitz bath to use? If yes, use it ALOT - it will help with the healing even though it make sting at the time.

Also - I know I dreading peeing because it stung so much - if you have this - try filling up the sitz bath with warm water & peeing in that - it will help.

Don't worry - it will get better!

  • I had an infection (yellow stuff leaking from the incision)..but I had an episiotomy and she did not rate it like a tear.  She did tell me that I had over 40 stitches, it was pretty bad.

Around day 4-5 I noticed I was in MORE pain and called the MW (it was a thursday) they didn't call me back..so I assumed it was normal.  Monday my MW was back in and called asking if I had been called..no..so she had me come in.

I had busted out stitches and it was infected.  I was put on antibiotics and was supposed to do a sitz bath religiously.  In reality doing the sitz hurt me alot, the angle I guess.  And I never had time to do it for 20 mins multiple times a day.  I started mixing epsom salt in my spray bottle thingy and using that ALL THE TIME.  I also use the handheld shower sprayer and spray down there really well.

I'm doing so well now that I feel like i'm ready for sex, atleast when I was drunk the other night I was anyway.

She told me that it would have to heal by granulation (I wasn't sure what that was)...and hopefully I wouldn't need anything else done.

I still look kinda..off down there, but I also still have a small hemmhorid

What is this surgery with a low success rate?  I've seen someone post about it before?
