They only work if your body is ready. BUT the night I went into labor I went for a loooong walk. However, they weren't strong enough, and I was put on pitocin for multiple reasons.
I was terrified of being induced and was convinced I would have to be (my mom was induced with me)... fortunately our LO came just 3 days after his due date naturally!
In the 48 hours prior to his birth, I had just started taking Evening Primrose Oil orally (got it at Whole Foods) and drinking Red Raspberry Leaf tea. During the week of his birth I took several LONG walks - like 3+ miles.
Also, we had a false alarm the day before his birth and when we went to L&D, the resident on staff stripped my membranes and I went into labor the next day.
I would recommend all of the above! Though, I am skeptical as to whether or not the Primrose Oil or Tea actually did anything?
I tried everything except castor oil and nothing worked for me. They tried stripping membranes at 39w, nothing. I had to be induced at 40w 4d for medical concerns. They tried breaking my water, contractions didn't start. So they started pit 5 hours after they broke my water and E was born 4.5 hours later.
Acupuncture! My acupuncturist told me in her culture its very important what day baby comes on because of the signs. They induce down to the day. I had an appt at 330 pm on Monday and she said I would deliver by noon the next day. My girl was born at 1046 am on Tue. As she wiggled the pressure points it would give me contractions. Freakiest thing ever.

I second this. My chiro did the pressure points thing and I went into labor 12 hours later. It was four days after my due date so I was more than ready.
I'm convinced sex and walking worked for me. The hormones in sperm are supposed to help with effacement and at 39wks i was only 1cm, but 100% effaced. I was the same at 40 wks and we scheduled an induction at 41wks 1day. I walked as much as I could stand to and my water broke at 40wks 5days. horray for no induction!!

Good luck and labor dust!
