Re: the latest news in the juice debate

  • Oh my poor poor obese child!  Between having been formula fed and now drinking the occasional watered down juice cup, I think he will be ready for "The Biggest Loser" by age 10.

Seriously, all things in moderation IMO.

  • DD won't drink juice. It's a blessing & a curse. There is the sugar factor but when she needs to drink Pedialyte I'd love for her to like it.

So for now it's water & milk in our home. I can live with that.

ZOMGJUICE!  I give my child juice!!!!!!!!!!!!!1`11!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Don't judge me!  We can't all be perfect organic mothers.  You need to lighten up.  This board is about support.  I had juice as a kid and turned out fine. You can just get away with posting this because you're popular. My pedi says juice is okay.  My friend's kid's life was saved by juice.  This might be a regional thing.  You can't believe everything you read.  Everything in moderation.  U DONT NO MY LYFE!!!!!!!!!!!!1!!!!!!!!!!!!!11!!!!!!!!!!

LOL.  We only drink organic freshly squeezed juice blessed by bump gods in our house.  It's what works for our family.

  • I'm going to come down somewhere in the middle between flaming that article and enjoying it.

J doesn't drink much juice.  We don't give it to him in a sippy, but he will share with us if we're drinking it.  I think in moderation it is an addition to his balanced diet.  However, I think that comparing 100% apple juice to a sippy full of Pepsi is total and complete crap.

So I guess my opinion is that I make the decisions of what my child eats using my own common sense, and not the latest study that really tells you a whole bunch of nothing.

  • meh....DS drinks Apple and Eve which has very little sugar as it is and then I add water.

did you read all three pages?  there was actually a lot of information.

most interesting to me was the info on how bodies digest fructose from fruit differently then fructose from juice and the number of pieces of fruit that go into one glass. no one would sit down and eat 6 oranges, right?

  • LOL at all the responses. But I think people who feed organic are judged more than anybody else on these boards. That's always the first sarcastic thing thrown into the mix. Just sayin.

And LOL again. No, DS does not get juice. DH is the only person in his family not morbidly obese, and there is obesity in my family as well. DH also has diabetes on his side so ZOMG all you want.

  • Every morning, I give Joseph a 3-liter bottle of Mountain Dew and a straw. If he hasn't finished it by bedtime, it goes in his crib with him.

What I mean is that I didn't need the article to tell me that fruit juice is just nature's sugar water.  Isn't that common knowledge, and wasn't that the main point of the article?  Maybe that isn't widely known.  ::shrugs::

  • Too bad my 9 y/o 56 lb son didnt get the memo.  lol

Rarely do I actually laugh audibly in response to, well, anything. But THIS made me snort. Fo realz.

  • The "more than 12 oz. a day" thing seems like a lot though, doesn't it?  I mean, that's like three breakfast juice glasses.  I totally get what they're saying about the less filling calories, but it seems like a portion control issue rather than a juice issue.

But I'll admit we sorta Gerson freaks.  DD & I both have juice/yogurt smoothies for breakfast a lot of days.  I juice nearly every morning.

  • Can you find a similar article on soda? Seriously, my parents think it's a "real treat" for DD to have soda when she is with her grandparents and don't understand why I flip out about this and say she doesn't need it.

  • At his last pedi visit, DH was told that orange juice was good but no other juice.  Of course DH didn't ask why... Any ideas?

  • I also think there are different qualities of juice. Some allow you the option to get a serving of veggies in too. I agree about all things in moderation. DD gets watered down juice occasionally and I feel fine with it. I definitely monitor it and read lots of labels.

  • We're a 'milk and water only' household because I'm too cheap to buy juice when I'm already shelling out for organic milk.

  • DD drinks a sippy of juice every morning, at 21 months she is not even 25lbs yet.

Like Francesca said, all things in moderation!

  • Madeleine and I are both enjoying some nice apple cider as I post this.
  • Well, I have to say I'm sort of anti-juice for my kiddo at this age, but mostly because my kid LOVES water, so I don't have to fight that battle.  And because she started a new daycare (where they give watered down juice) and promptly came down with a stomach bug that I attributed in part to the juice in her diet, so that was my ammo to tell them to give her water. ;)

I did like the article, though; thx for posting and starting discussion, however it goes!

No clue, I always thought no orange juice because of the acidity. DD drinks lots of pear, prune & apple juice along with water because of constipation issues.

    LOL!

Its really not that serious.  Its juice.  We all grew up on it.  Heck if you are from a lower socio-economic group you probably didn't get juice you got drink.  There is so much more to being obese than juice.  Like everything its about moderation.  Should you give juice at all three meals and all day long, probably not. But juice once an awhile, who really cares.  Its not that serious.
