Trying to Get Pregnant

Just got Aflac policies

Mr Techie and I agreed it's a good idea to have the Personal Sickness and Hospitalization policies. Our heath insurance basically saves up all your pregnancy bills- tests, office visits, ect until you have the baby. Then you get one large bill. Ours will be $4k minimum.

You have to have the policies for 10 months before the baby's birth (to the day!) to have it apply to the pregnancy and hospital bills. And after reading so much here I really debated about whether or not it's a good idea. After all, if we don't get KU for 6 months or more, it's worth decreases every time we make a payment.

I can add to the policy for another $10 a month and make it a family plan to include a LO before they are born. That way, if they end up being kept in hosptial or worse, in a NICU for days or weeks, we get something back every single day.

For a normal labor and delivery at or around the 9 month mark we could be getting back $3 to $4,000 AFTER we pay our bill from the insurance company.

The effective date of the policy is Dec 1st so a baby could be in September 2010 and be okay. I was born 31 days early (though my sister was exactly on time).

What's the concensus here about these types of policy for pregnancy? In favor? Absolutely not?

Re: Just got Aflac policies

  • I have one - it doesn't go into effect until Jan. 1, but my guy said that as long as I get KU Jan. 1 or later, I would be covered - no 10 month deal.  Although so many people have said this about the 10 month thing that I'm going to double check.  I do agree that if it takes a while, it's value decreases.  Although it covers not just pregnancy related hospitalizations and would still cover complications even if I got KU before Jan. 1.

  • Yeah, certainly check the 10 month thing.

I've read reviews on Consumer Reports about people who purchased the policy but weren't told about the 10 month part and got screwed. And the agent I spoke with on the phone was very, very clear about that part.

Some states have special laws regarding health insurance policies that make it okay to buy them pretty much a minute before official birth. :)

  • I have the policy from Aflac. I also added the Hospitalization. I think that its well worth it. For what I pay per month to compared to what I'll get after baby is born, it is worth it to me.

Gym, I would definitely double check because mine was also very clear about it being 10 months. Not "dont get KU before Jan 1, etc."

I'm beginning to think my guy is on crack!  I was so specific when I asked him too and he even said that if I got KU at the very end of December to call him and let him know and he would see what he could do about fixing it so I would be covered even though the policy technically doesn't start until Jan. 1.  Grrr.....

  • I think it's great that you are planning ahead and I'm sure it will be well worth it in the end.  Especially because you already are aware of the out of pocket costs.  DH's insurance covers pretty well and I don't work now, so it's not something we're considering.  But if we depended on my income I would definitely do it.

I used to work for a large, national insurance company and most of them will not fix a mistake based on agent misrepresentation. Basically, they like to claim that you should have read your 15,000 page policy word for word and if you didn't know something then it's on you.  :(

I hope you get KU but I hope you're covered too!
