I just today realized I never got the results of DH's b/w from 11/10. I spoke to our RE and his testosterone is 206 where a normal range is from 241 - 800-something. From what I'm reading, it sounds like this may decrease sperm count (and ours is low) but I also read that testosterone supplements can negatively impact sperm count as well because the body sees it's getting it from an outside source and quits making its own.
I left a message with DH's urologist but I'm wondering if any of you have personal experience. What did your doctors say? How big of an impact may this have? It may not matter since we're doing IUI but I'm curious. TIA!
ETA - it's ironic too b/c DH's sex drive is sometimes off the charts!
Re: Any of YHs have low testosterone?
Mine does. He was on the low side of normal. My first RE gave us a list of vitamins to take. My new RE says he doesn't see the point, but said that if we feel like taking them to still go a head. He had a MFI uro who put him on clomid.
The clomid doubled his count. We don't know if the the vitamins have helped, we haven't gotten the results from the last SA yet.
MH's testosterone level was 72...we had to rule out Pitutary tumore etc..He is on HCG injections.
Ironically my DH had an awesome sex drive until the urologist told him " you should not be able to sustain an erection" ...thanks for planting the seed a$$hole...but now with the injections he is back!
As far as Testosterone Supplements..they kill sperm.. they do not generate it. So if we conceive...DH will go on a testosterone cream to maintain his levels. The HCG does have some funny side effects for DH (sore nipples, etc. I just say welcome to having your period!). HCG takes three months to effect sperm count. DH started with retrograde ejaculation due to the low testosterone and muscle wasting....
I could go on and on...HTH..
Thank you both! Our urologist hasn't recommended Clomid or vitamins yet - DH had to take an antibiotic for possible prostatits and will likely need surgery for varicoceles, but we are going ahead with IUI in the meantime. We've got a combination of so many different things contributing to low count - infection, varicocele, low testosterone, smoking, weight. Ugh!! We're tackling them one at a time. DH has been off cigarettes for 6 weeks now and just finished antibiotics. His next SA will be done at the same time as IUI in a couple of weeks so I guess we'll see if we've made any progress.
I'm sure we'll have a more definitive answer once we actually talk to the urologist but thanks for sharing your experiences. Good luck to you both!
